Virginia Tech Students Poisoned by Carbon Monoxide

My god, what next?

How do we prevent this from EVER happening again? (MohawkOV1D - 8/19/2007 10:13:48 PM)
Ban carbon monoxide!

Why do we need it anyway?  Anyone caught bringing carbon monoxide on campus should be expelled and evaluated to see if they are mentally deranged.  We need new laws to protect the innocent.  Someone charter a commission and start a memorial fund.  Gov. Squiggy should get right on this.

(Actually, I hope these folks are OK, and recover quickly)

How about (spotter - 8/19/2007 10:27:49 PM)
if we just hope and pray for the best for these students, particularly the ones who are struggling for their lives, and lay off the politics, Mohawk?

I don't know what I'd do if I had a kid at Tech, but I'd probably be getting in the car right now, to bring them home.  How much can one school take?

I'm just dishing out (MohawkOV1D - 8/20/2007 12:36:15 AM)
what was dished.  I of course meant no disrespect toward the people injured (and said so).  I'm just contrasting happenstance vs happenstance.

Except in this happenstance - there is no political milleage to be gained for the next election cycle.  No grist for the mill.  Unless, of course, someone shot the water heater.

And incase you haven't noticed - It's always about politics.

No, it's not. (spotter - 8/20/2007 10:20:59 AM)

Agreed. (Lowell - 8/20/2007 10:23:14 AM)
Life's not always about politics.  In fact, it's mostly NOT about politics, thanks goodness.  As far as the Virginia Tech tragedy last spring, that was about as far from politics as you can get.

Disagree! Sort of... (MohawkOV1D - 8/20/2007 11:09:25 AM)
"As far as the Virginia Tech tragedy last spring, that was about as far from politics as you can get."

Aren't you expecting a change in the law?  Aren't you expecting more legislation?  Aren't you expecting Dem's to put up a bucket full of feel good - do nothing legislation that makes you feel safer?  And, just in time for election day, will you judge the candidates by who voted for it and who voted against it?

Please just give it a rest, Mohawk. (spotter - 8/20/2007 12:53:02 PM)
It's not the time.

Agreed. (Lowell - 8/20/2007 12:55:49 PM)
n/t

Actually, believe it or not... (Lowell - 8/20/2007 12:56:49 PM)
I'm not really "expecting" much of anything at this point, although I'm certainly curious to see what the commission comes up with.  At the minimum, I would hope that they would address mental health issues and campus security.

Too early to have heating on in the apartment complex, but faulty furnaces can be the source of carbon monoxide.  Along with smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors are highly recommended and in some areas required by code in rental properties that have gas heat or stoves.
Perhaps this apartment complex uses gas to fuel the air
conditioning.  Seems to remember my first house in Arlington had gas central air.
Could also have been a leaking gas stove.

Thanks Lowell for posting the article. Next time I shall read it before posting.  It appears the water heater may have been the source of the problem.

Get a CO Detector! Now. (Bubby - 8/20/2007 9:24:46 AM)
Lowes and Home Depot both sell Carbon Monoxide (CO) detectors, they cost about $50 and plug into a wall outlet.  It is the best $50 you could spend on your back-to-school list. Do it now, every home and apartment should have one.

CO is a common household threat (Kindler - 8/20/2007 8:54:07 PM)
It can come from poorly ventilated combustion devices like stoves or heaters (as someone mentioned), attached garages where cars have been idling, or electric generators that are being run indoors (they should never be used indoors or even outdoors near a window -- when disasters happen and people lose power, this is always a source of illness and death).

Some cities (like Chicago) require CO detectors in all homes.  Of course, here in Virginia, we have brave patriots like Mohaca protecting us from such tyrannical government actions.

Kindler....Both Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax require smoke detectors.  This becomes a home inspection issue and contract item upon resale if one isn't installed and in the proper location. My TH requires 4.  I sincerely hope this code is extended to carbon monoxide detectors.
