Jenna Bush to Marry RPV Chair's Son

Well, isn't this just special:

Jenna Bush, 25, is marrying Henry Hager, 28, a former White House aide who used to work with Karl Rove.

His father, John Hager, is the chairman of the Virginia Republican Party.

John Hager also served as Lt. Governor of Virginia, and also assistant secretary for special education and rehabilitative services in the Bush Administration.  According to the Richmond Style Weekly, John's son Henry "worked for Karl Rove's team to help re-elect Bush."

So what's Henry Hager like? "He's got his head on straight," says one friend of the family. He's a graduate of St. Christopher's School and has collegiate good looks, according to a female account. Style was unable to reach him at his Arlington apartment.

Henry Hager also is reported to be "ambitious."  Just imagine Henry Hager and his lovely wife Jenna campaigning around Virginia together.  Maybe Kenton Ngo or James Martin will still be blogging at that point and can cover the race! ;)

Question (phriendlyjaime - 8/16/2007 4:21:22 PM)
Isn't this considered a conflict of interest?  I mean, in a really, really far out in left field kind of way, but still...

Is it too early to suggest... (Donkey Hotay - 8/16/2007 4:31:04 PM)
that the babies will look like this? Only not nearly as cute.

I don't know, but check out (Lowell - 8/16/2007 4:48:50 PM)
this site about the Bush family exploits!*

*aside from Dubya's war in Iraq, the "heckuva job" in New Orleans, etc.

Pretty classy, Lowell (Carrington - 8/16/2007 5:03:12 PM)
Posts (and websites) like that make me think M. Warner made the right call bagging the national race to keep his daughter's out of the spotlight.  As a regular reader who generally respects this site, I encourage you to take the link down.

Henry's a great guy and I've not seen Jenna trying to get publicly involved with her father's policies.  All in all, I think both twins have handled the spotlight admirably.  I certainly wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I am happy for the two of them and I hope others will be as well.  Don't be petty losers.

Petty losers? (Lowell - 8/16/2007 5:06:46 PM)
These people preach "family values" to all of us but are the biggest hypocrites.  There are tons of websites detailing the exploits of the Bush family, from Prescott on down.  It's not a pretty picture, no matter how much you try and cover it up.

As far as Henry Hager is concerned, he very well might be the greatest guy in the world, and I wish him the best of luck in that family.

The parents are preaching family values... (Carrington - 8/16/2007 5:08:23 PM)
the kids are just living their lives.

So you're arguing that upbringing has nothing (Lowell - 8/16/2007 5:12:16 PM)
to do with how the "kids" turn out?  And I'm not just talking about the young adults, but also George Dubya, "George P," and the entire clan - almost none of whom are "kids," by the way.  Also, if you don't think the Bush clan has plans for continuing its political dynasty, think again.  We'll see how they do in the age of the blogs...will they be able to cover up stuff - like Dubya's alcohol and drug days when he was avoiding Vietnam - like they did in the past, I don't think so!

I'm arguing (Carrington - 8/16/2007 5:19:52 PM)
That the children of politicians, unless they choose the public spotlight by running for office themselves, should largely be left alone.  I am aware that in the age of blogs and the 24 hour news cycle, that's an incredibly naiive desire on my part.

That said, I think the desire to keep family out of the spotlight has and will continue to keep good people (who in generations past might have run for public office) in the private sector.

Don't let your hatred of the father's policies (or perhaps the father himself) extend to those who don't deserve it.

Well (phriendlyjaime - 8/16/2007 5:27:49 PM)
then they shouldn't have run around getting drunk in public while underage.  And what about their crazy happenings on their last vacation that were swept under the rug until the country booted them out?

They've made their own choices.... (Dianne - 8/16/2007 5:30:04 PM)
1.  In 2004 John Hager was 25, an adult, and chose to work for Carl Rove to re-elect George Bush.

2.  You are known by the company you keep.

3.  When you campaign for a candidate, you are "public" whether you are a son or daughter of a "dignitary" or not.

4.  Ms. Bush has had "run-ins" with the law.

Of course, everyone wishes them well, but they've made their own choices.

Wish them well? (AmerIdiot - 8/16/2007 8:25:31 PM)
I don't wish them well. Far from it.

Jenna hasn't exactly avoided the (Lowell - 8/16/2007 6:27:56 PM)
public spotlight.  According to Wikipedia:

Jenna made media appearances during the summer of 2004 prior to the 2004 US Presidential election when she and Barbara made several public appearances, including giving a speech to the Republican Convention on August 31.  Jenna and Barbara took turns traveling to swing states with their father and also gave a seven-page interview and photo shoot in Vogue magazine.

That's not exactly avoiding the spotlight or politics!!!

By the way, other Bush children like Jeb's son George P. Bush, have been very active in politics as well.  "P" spoke at the 1988 Republican National Convention and campaigned for his uncle George during the 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns.

This is the Bush family business, after all.

or..... (Donkey Hotay - 8/16/2007 5:10:23 PM)
Perhaps Warner realized that Edwards had the "white southern guy" thing locked up and realized this wasn't his year?

I've never heard any negative stories (Lowell - 8/16/2007 5:16:34 PM)
at all about Mark Warner's kids, but thanks for implying that there might be something bad out there.  Come to think of it, I've never heard any negative stories about the Chelsea Clinton either, even though Republicans like to pretend Bill and Hillary are the worst people in the world (Bill's a drug-dealing murderer, Hillary's an evil lesbian or whatever).  So here's the difference between Republicans and Democrats:  we don't preach, we PRACTICE healthy family values.

PREGNANT (bherring - 8/16/2007 5:24:47 PM)

in her baby shower! Cute!

Pregnant (AmerIdiot - 8/16/2007 8:29:00 PM)
Is Young Mr. Hagar "taking one for the team".
Last we heard from Jenna, she was partying in Brazil.
Is there a beautiful Brazilian baby with a VERY wasp name in our future?

OMG! (Doug in Mount Vernon - 8/16/2007 5:30:27 PM)
Quick!  We need a Constitutional Amendment against children of lying conservatives being able to marry one another!  After all, they'll most likely destroy the sanctity of honest political debate and just ruin marriage for everyone else!!!

Quick, everyone write your Congressmen!

The babies (Rebecca - 8/16/2007 5:37:41 PM)
May I modestly suggest that the babies may look like a cross between a Chimp and an Elephant?

Is it just me.... (ericy - 8/16/2007 5:38:41 PM)

this is to me an entirely non-newsworthy story.  Yet the media covers it as if this is somehow significant.

Let me see if I have this straight . . . (True Blue - 8/16/2007 8:55:56 PM)
The Republicans are hinting about the need for a draft to fight the War in Iraq and the next thing you know Henry Hager's getting married.

Is that still a deferral?

Maybe he got some friendly advice on how to avoid the draft from Cheney.
