Henry Tieleman is a Democratic legend in southwestern Virginia, and rightfully so.  Here's his latest update of what's going on. Thanks!

Campaign Time

1. Democracy Prevails had a very successful booth at the "Steppin' Out " street festival on 3rd and 4th of August in Blacksburg. We garnered 225 signatures from qualified voters for getting the current presidential candidates on the ballot for the presidential primary to be held in Virginia on February 12, 2008. As you may know certain states are moving the date of their primaries forward because everyone wants to be first. As a result of this the outcome might be already known when Virginia will conduct its presidential primary.

Consequently Democracy Prevails has been at events with table or booth having Hillary, Obama and John Edwards buttons and bumper stickers. At the present time we have about $1500 in the bank. We need to order more campaign materials as soon as the Democratic standard bearer is known. Also we need to order campaign materials as soon as the Democratic candidate for the US Senate becomes known (Mark Warner?).

2. The regular scheduled Democracy Prevails meeting will be on Wednesday. August 22 at 7:00 pm at Bogen's Restaurant on Main Street in Blacksburg. Every one is welcome!

Our PAC does not recognize memberships but we prefer hard working progressive Democrats to be part of this organization.

Agenda:  a. Discussion of the coming campaigns.

  b. Comments by Brian Phillips the DNC representative for SW Virginia.

  c. DVD showing of sections of the Bush Crimes Commission Hearings.

3. The Radford City Democratic Committee will host a potluck picnic on Friday, August 24 at 5:00 p.m. in the Bisset Park along the New River under the bridge to Fairlawn in Radford. Come out and meet Mike Breiner, candidate for State Senate in the 22nd senatorial district that includes among others, Radford, southern part of Montgomery County (Christiansburg). Peggy Frank, candidate for delegate of the 7th electoral district will be there. Delegate Jim Shuler will give the keynote address. For more info call Gail Montuori at 639-1560.

4. The Hillsville Gun Show and Flea Market will be from Friday August 31 till Monday September 3.  The Democracy Prevails booth (10'x10' tent) will be at the regular place on Main Street across from the VFW building. This is an enormous event visited by thousands of people. Everybody should be interested in our collection of buttons and bumper stickers of our presidential candidates. The event runs during the daylight hours from early in the morning till dusk in the evening. We desperately need volunteers to help with the booth, two persons is not enough. Please send the time and the days you want to volunteer to Henry Tieleman at HWTieleman@aol.com or by phone at 540-382-7961.

5. The Annual Ninth District Acres of Democrats Rally on Sunday September 2, 2007 2:00 p.m. in Edwards Hall on the Campus of New River Community College in Dublin, Virginia. Invited guests include Governor Tim Kaine, US senator Jim Webb, Former Governor Mark Warner!!!, Members of the Virginia General Assembly and State and Local Officials and Candidates. Tickets for lunch are $5 each and may be purchased from your local Democratic Chairperson or by contacting Boucher for Congress Office P.O. Box 2000, Abingdon, VA  24212 Phone 276-628-7197.  Please make checks available to: Pulaski County Democratic Committee. The contact information for your local Democratic Chairperson is available on: www.Boucherforcongress.com

Directions: From I-81 take exit 98 onto route 100 towards Dublin. Go approximately 2 miles and turn left onto the campus. Take the first left into the parking area A that is in front of Edwards Hall

6. Future events where Democracy Prevails will be present, mark your agenda:

  a. "Olde Salem Days Arts and Crafts" in Salem, VA, Saturday, September 8 from 10 am till 5pm with Sam Rasoul congressional candidate for the US House 6th district.

  b. Wilderness Trail Festival in Christiansburg, VA, Saturday September 15 from 9:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m.

  c. Annual UMWA Fish Fry in Castlewood (Russell County), VA also on Saturday September 15. Come early and stay late. Meal is Free! For directions look on your Virginia map! This event is usually attended by Governor Jim Kaine and Congressman Boucher.

  d. Annual Fish Fry in Clintwood (Dickinson County), VA on Sunday September 16 in Clintwood, VA

More details on these events will follow at a later date.

7. On September 15, General David Petraeus, the escalation commander in Iraq, and Ryan Crocker the escalation US ambassador to that country, will present their "progress report" to Congress. This very name should tell you what to expect. Despite Bush's repeated statements that the report will reflect evaluation by the General and the Ambassador, administration officials have already admitted that it would actually be written by the White House. Before you get dizzied with endless spin of these characters and Bush and his administration take a look at a paper by Tom Engelhardt "Escalation by the Numbers: What Progress in Iraq Really Means." You can find this paper on line at http://www.tomdispat...

This well-documented paper should provide you with ample information to critically evaluate their reports. Counting accurately amid widespread disruption, mayhem, and bloodshed, under a failing occupation is essentially impossible.

In my humble opinion the so-called war on terror is nothing more than a war to increase the number of terrorists in the Middle East and to fan fear in the Homeland.

I hope to see you at the above-mentioned events.

Please distribute widely!

Henry is the man! (MikeSizemore - 8/16/2007 6:08:15 PM)
I had the honor of working with Henry Tieleman for 3 years in Blacksburg while I was attending Virginia Tech, and let me say, there is no harder working Democrat in America than this man! During campaign season, its 7 days a week, sun up to sun down as a volunteer, burning gas from one end of the 9th district to the other. He's an absolute inspirtation to be around, and a total rockstar.

Henry is my Dad! (tielemananne - 8/16/2007 11:17:33 PM)
I have never blogged before but I must say I so proud of my Dad and all he does for our country. He is the essence of grassroots and believes in not just talking but doing and organizing.  You should see his garage... full of signs, bumper stickers, buttons etc.  During my recent visit home I met some of his "democratic" friends in SW Virginia. They are such nice people that are all trying to make this a better country and beleive that it is worth fighting for what is right.  So to all of you SW Dems- thanks for supporting my Dad and all he does. Keep up the good work... you do make a difference!!

It's people like your Dad who give me hope (Lowell - 8/17/2007 10:04:20 AM)
