Karen Schultz, Democratic nominee for the 27th Senate district (Winchester, Clarke and Warren Counties, most of Fauquier and Western Loudoun, today (August 11) opened an office in Leesburg to help maximize her efforts in Loudoun.

Your fearless blogger attended, and below the fold will offer some comments and additional photos.
This is now a race targeted by the state party.  Remember, Dems need at least net 4 Senate seats to take control.  There are 3 in Fairfax, there is Pollard a bit South of those of us in NoVa, and there is clearly Karen in what was Russ Potts' district. This is a winnable race, although it will take hard work.

The office is at 101 Wirt St. SW in Leesburg, one from the intersection of King and Loudoun, and only one additional blog from King and Market.

Never having met Karen before, I was delighted to be able to get a picture of the two of us together  Karen Schultz & teacherken

After about an hour of talking with various supporters, including Congressional candidate for the 10th District MIke Turner (to Karen's right),Mike Turner on left with Karen Schultz

Karen addressed the assemblied people:  Karen in Leesburg speaking to supporters

While I had known of Karen's service on school boards and her teaching at Shenandoah, I had not known she had sent students into correctional facilities to assist with healthcare.  Nor had I known that she comes to he desire to serve legislatively from her father, who served in the Lege as the late Mollie Ivins used to describe that parliamentary body based in Austin.

Karen also made it clear that the position of State Senator would not be a stepping stone for her:  this is the position in which she wishes to serve the people of her community.

Just after she finished speaking, Delegate candidate Marty Martinez, currently a member of the Leesburg City council and who shares a large number of precincts with Karen, took time off from his own door-knocking to stop by:  Karen Schultz & Marty Martinez

I first donated to Karen's campaign because of a request from Creigh Deeds.  When my contribution was received Karen's finance director recognized my name:  Bob Goldstein had served as finance director for a Washington State Congressional campaign of my college classmate Peter Goldmark (whose campaign manager Jeremiah Levine is running the Martinez campaign).  That is what first connected me with this campaign, and the more I have learned the more interesting I find it.

Karen Schultz will be coming here to RaisingKaine to live blog.  She also has a forthcoming fundraiser with Governor Kaine, having already had a very successful even with former Governor Mark Warner.

So keep an eye on this campaign, and consider helping if you can - Leesburg is close enough to come to the office and make some phone calls.

And remember -  this is what the next Senator from the 27th looks like:  Karen Schultz, state senate candidate
