Liz Bradsher's Conflicts of Interest

This is a letter to the editor I will be sending out to the Connection:

It has come to my attention that Liz Bradsher, the Republican candidate for School Board from Springfield, is also currently the Legislative Chair on the South County School Board. This is clearly a conflict of interest: the Virginia PTA bylaws state that:

"The organization or members in their official capacities shall not--directly or indirectly--participate or intervene (in any way, including the publishing or distributing of statements) in any political campaign on behalf of, or in opposition to, any candidate for public office; or devote more than an insubstantial part of its activities to attempting to influence legislation by propaganda or otherwise."

According to this, Liz should have resigned before pursuing the School Board seat. Her opponent, Ramona Morrow, has done the right thing-prior to the start of her campaign, she resigned her positions as the Fairfax County Council of PTAs president.

As if this weren't bad enough, Liz also has Lisa Adler listed on her website, thanking her for her help. Lisa is a former SCSS PTA President, and currently also a PTSA board member at South County-as co-chair for the All Night Grad Party. (You can find their directory here). Though I suppose Lisa may not be acting in her "official capacity," as her title is not listed on Liz's site, it is a little ridiculous to think that Liz can still be legislative chair when she is running to hold a seat in a legislative body.

The PTSA bylaws are very specific in this case-and Liz should be ashamed of herself for this clear and obvious case of conflict of interest. This is yet another example of how Liz Bradsher calls for what she deems to be "accountability" but disregards rules of organizations that she is a member of-or perhaps worse, tries to twist them to fit her own desires rather than contemplating their intended purpose.

Needless to say, I will be supporting a candidate that actually stands up for what is right ethically as well as what is right for all children-Ramona Morrow.
