Democracy Corps: Dems to Make Major Gains in 2008?

Check out this report by the Democracy Corps and see what you think.  According to Stan Greenberg, James Carville and Ana Iparraguirre:

...the Republicans are in trouble - almost as much trouble as they were
in 2006
. Democrats are not only ahead in the most competitive Republican districts (Tier 1), but they also lead by 3 points in the second tier, less competitive Republican seats, which means there might well be additional Congressional seats at risk beyond the 35. The extent of Republicans' vulnerabilities suggests that Democrats can take their advantage far into Republican territory in 2008. This pattern that allowed the Democrats to take 30 seats in the last mid-term election could well take Democrats up to 20 in the Presidential, unless confounded by intervening events. There really could be another wave election.

Also, check out Democracy Corps' Battleground List, and note that Tom Davis is in Tier 1, while Bob Goodlatte and Thelma Drake are in Tier 2 - vulnerable.

In sum, "The Democrats are in a strong position to hold on to their majority in the House and
make significant inroads into Republican territory."  Not a bad position to be in right now.  Too bad things in this country had to get so bad under Republican (mis)rule to bring us this point.

Good news but not entirely accurate (Shenandoah Democrat - 8/3/2007 10:42:45 PM)
Just a cursory glance over the congressional races listed in Virginia reveals a major error in this list. Feder challenging Wolf should be listed, probably in Tier 1. And Goodlatte is anything but vulnerable, certainly not more than Wolf and several other rethugs.
Goodlatte has had NO opposition for ten years! He's in a dominantly conservative Republican district, (Shenandoah Valley) that normally polls 65%-35% Republican. Sam Rasoul has courageously announced his campaign of truth to oppose Goodlatte, but it's going to take time for the hide bound conservative tradition of this area to change. The fact is, Goodlatte represents large agribusiness, not the  average farmer in this Valley.
Fact: Over half the farms in Shenandoah County are below break-even; farmers here aren't just struggling, they're sinking, and their congressman is having lunch with Cargill.

I agree that Feder should be in Tier 1 (Lowell - 8/4/2007 5:58:04 AM)
I'm not sure about Goodlatte, but I'm very glad to see Sam Rasoul taking him on!
