They Love Us....Or Not

Well, the results of our latest (unscientific) poll are in, and it's a shocker - people have mixed feelings about the Virginia blogs!  In fact, only two people  (out of 65) said they "love 'em all" and only one person said he/she "hate[s] 'em all."  Nobody said that they specifically hate the Democratic blogs, but nine people (13.85%) said they specifically "hate[d] the Rep. blogs, love[d] the Dem. blogs."

Feel free to elaborate on why you voted the way you did.  What do you love (or hate) about the Virginia blogs?

Stupid Insult Names (Harry Landers - 7/25/2007 8:35:56 AM)
Here's what I hate: Frequent use of silly, demeaning nicknames for public figures. It's not funny. It's not witty. It causes me to reject whatever the blogger has to say when they refer to "Sen. Thinkskin Gump" or "Bill OLIElly". It discourages meaningful dialogue in a forum that ought to be encouraging it.

"Bill OLIElly" (Lowell - 7/25/2007 8:37:15 AM)
actually comes from Al Franken, and I think it's very funny.  To each their own.

By the way, calling O'Reilly O'LIElly (Lowell - 7/25/2007 10:03:16 AM)
is not an insult, because it's true.  The guy lies constantly, which is why Al Franken gave him that nickname.

In general, I think nicknames can be very revealing (and amusing).  For instance, "Tricky Dicky" for Richard Nixon, "Honest Abe" for Lincoln, "Dumbya" or "Shrub" for Bush, etc.

Golden Rule (Harry Landers - 7/25/2007 3:22:54 PM)
calling O'Reilly O'LIElly is not an insult, because it's true.

I don't believe that truth negates the insult. For example, if I were to call somebody who was born out of wedlock a "bastard", that would be true, but it would also be insulting. If I called an overweight person "Fatty", that, too, would be true, but it would be an insult. If I said something knowingly false about you, you might choose to call me "Harry Slanders", and that would be an insult.

Many Virginia political bloggers choose to engage in this sort of name-calling. I'm certain it will continue, but I just find it juvenile and distasteful.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. (Lowell - 7/25/2007 3:42:25 PM)
I think it's humorous, as long as it's not taken to extremes of nastiness.  I certainly don't believe calling Bill O'Reilly a liar, which is what he is BIG TIME, is taking things to extremes.
