Fact Check

Bleary-eyed, after having watched the midnight airing of the gubernatorial debate. First thoughts:

Kaine kicked Kilgore butt.

Tim Kaine was the only candidate offering a positive message, as opposed to Jerry Kilgore, who wouldn't pledge to keep half of his TV ads positive. Kilgore dodged, bobbed, and weaved.

I will have a more full reaction after some sleep, but something struck me:

Jerry Kilgore asserted that there is not a single innocent person on death row. Perhaps you should ask Earl Washington, Jr., a man who was almost executed for a crime he did not commit. Kilgore also asserted that our DNA labs and criminal justice systems were essentially perfect, in spite of the fact that the firm that provides DNA testing for the Virginia Department of Forensic Science had its $7 million contract with the Illinois justice system broken due to rampant mistakes.  Can we really be assured that Jerry Kilgore, a man who is a firm believer in the "culture of life" (and therefore supports the death penalty) and wants to expand the death penalty will not execute innocent people? Or is he avoiding life in prison because he can't manage a prison system--under his watch as Secretary of Public Safety jailbreaks increased 300%, a child rapist's escape was blamed on the fog, and he gloated one day that "we have gone an entire day without an escape"?

Jerry Kilgore cannot be trusted to keep us safe and justice pure.
