Rust: Only Got "Positive" Reaction to Abuser Fees

I love this, if nothing else for comic relief:

Del. Tom Rust (R-Herndon), one of the original authors of the bill that ended up being rolled into the comprehensive "omnibus" bill that passed earlier this year, said he was surprised at the sudden public protest. He said that a bill with abuser fee provisions has passed the House of Delegates for three consecutive years.

"I've been speaking of this for a good solid two years, and got little reaction other than positive," Rust said. "I do think there's an awful lot of misinformation out there about it, and some are attempting to use it for raw politics, which is unfortunate."

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha.  Oh, that was a good one.  Alright, now that I've stopped snorting milk out my nose, let me attempt to clarify what Del. Rust is saying here:

1. Along with some of my Republican friends, I came up with this idea and we all thought it was great!
2. I helped get it passed through the REPUBLICAN-CONTROLLED HOUSE three years in a row, definitively proving that this was NOT Tim Kaine's idea (Kaine only became governor 1 1/2 years ago). Whoops.
3. All of my fellow Republican delegates thought it was a brilliant idea, why does the darn public  have to be so "misinformed" about stuff?
4. Now that 125,000+ people have signed a petition blasting my brilliant idea, I'm frustrated, panic-stricken, and looking for someone to blame. But who?  I got it, I'll use the vague word "some" and the passive construction("some are attempting") to imply that there's a vast left-wing conspiracy against me or something.  Hey, it worked for Hillary, right?

By the way, you all might want to contact the Times Community, submit Letters to the Editor on this issue, and let them know how you really feel about Tom Rust blaming voters for his bad legislation.

So let me get this straight.... (Dianne - 7/18/2007 7:47:56 PM)
Rust is saying that he was out there for a solid 2 years speaking on this matter and all he'd gotten was positive reactions?

So, if you believe that he actually was out there talking about it, he definitely wasn't telling them the "details" or people in Herndon are incredibly stupid.  I know people from Herndon and they're not stupid.

It's amazing, but... (Lowell - 7/18/2007 9:30:13 PM)
...I can't remember this as a major issue in the Albo-Werkheiser campaign.  Gee, could that be because Albo was NOT out there talking about it?  Or, did 120,000 Virginians have a complete change of heart in the last two years?  Hmmmm.
