Jeannemarie Then...and Now

May 15, 2007 - Jeannemarie Devolites Davis tells Fairfax voters "She Did It!" in passing the Virginia Transportation Plan.

July 17, 2007 - Jeannemarie Devolites Davis asks Governor Kaine for a special session to repeal the new law.

What changed in 8 weeks?  How about 124,000 signatures...and counting?

By the way, Devolites Davis doesn't just "say anything" when it comes to the abuser fees.  Check this out, courtesy of the Washington Post, on the Tysons Tunnel issue:

Only last month [January 2007], Devolites Davis discouraged tunnel supporters when she cut off the group's leader, Scott Monett, during a presentation he was making in Richmond. At Saturday's [pro-tunnel] rally, she drew cheers by saying she and other lawmakers would pressure Kaine to reconsider.

Say anything, indeed.

Didn't she used to be a gymnast? (Not Harry F. Byrd, Sr. - 7/18/2007 1:46:47 PM)

Flip Flop (Rebecca - 7/18/2007 1:53:33 PM)
The effect:

Jeannemarie's flip flops means we need a plop plop fizz fizz to settle our stomachs. It is sickening. No honesty, just smoke and mirrors.

The question (Rebecca - 7/18/2007 1:55:30 PM)
Didn't she vote for the legislation?

SHE WAS ITS CHIEF SPONSOR!?!?!#$!&! (Not Harry F. Byrd, Sr. - 7/18/2007 2:00:47 PM)

She voted for it several times... (Lowell - 7/18/2007 2:02:30 PM)
...after she was against it.  See here.

Jeannemarie Then and now (makenomistake - 7/18/2007 2:11:24 PM)

There must not be any thinking Dems in the legislation, especially those that voted for this legislation.  Have they been forgiven?

The way it sounds  that only Jeannemarie authored, supported, and got through this piece of legislation with no help from any other legislators.

Amazing.

Dems in the Senate were united (Lowell - 7/18/2007 2:15:50 PM)
against this legislation.  In the House, most Democrats were as well.  Both chambers are controlled by Republicans.  This is not that difficult an exercise in logic.

That's Not Quite Correct, Lowell (HisRoc - 7/18/2007 7:27:14 PM)
The Democrats were far from united against this legislation in either the Senate or the House.  The final vote in the Senate was 29-10-1 and the final vote in the House was 85-15.  In the Senate, the Yeas were 14 Republicans joined by 15 Democrats (Colgan, Deeds, Edwards, Herring, Houck, Howell, Lambert, Marsh, Miller, Puckett, Puller, Reynolds, Saslaw, Ticer, and Whipple).  In the lower chamber, more Democrats voted for this bill than voted for that stupid "droopy pants" law that the House passed last year.

In addition to plenty of Democrats in both houses voting for HB3202, the Republicans also had the support of Governor Kaine.  As I posted in an earlier diary on this subject, the Washington Post quoted him as being in favor of abuser fees "from the very beginning."

This was truly bi-partisan insanity.  So why try to lay all this bad law-making on the Republicans?  They are their own worst enemies and when you attempt to distort the record you inadvertently prop them up.  That's a tactic that Gerry Connolly uses and one that, quite frankly, is unworthy of RK.

Looking at 3202 is very misleading (Lowell - 7/18/2007 7:40:28 PM)
That was the final bill for transportation, including anything and everything.  It came after the House Republicans steamrolled Russ Potts, the Senate Republicans, and everybody else with the bill they developed in secret, then rammed through at the last minute.  I would strongly recommend looking back at the earlier votes, where you'll see quite a different story...not bipartisan at all.

Ben explained it very well (Lowell - 7/18/2007 7:47:31 PM)
the other day:  almost all the delegates who voted all 4 times FOR the abuser fees were Republicans

53 Delegates Voted 100% YES (4-0) on Abuser Fees
(Dave Albo, Clay Athey, Rob Bell, David Bulova, Vince Callahan, Chuck Caputo, Bill Carrico, John Cosgrove, Kirk Cox, Anne Crockett-Stark, William Fralin, Morgan Griffith, Phil Hamilton, Frank Hargrove, Algie Howell, Bill Howell, Tim Hugo, Robert Hurt, Sal Iaquinto, Riley Ingram, Bill Janis, Chris Jones, Terry Kilgore, Steve Landes, Lynwood Lewis, Scott Lingamfelter, Matt Lohr, Dave Marsden, Danny Marshall, Joe May, Michele McQuigg, Jackson Miller, Paula Miller, Harvey Morgan, Sam Nixon, John O'Bannon, Glenn Oder, Bobby Orrock, Chris Peace, David Poisson, Bob Purkey, Lacey Putney, Jack Reid, Tom Rust, Chris Saxman, Ed Scott, Steve Shannon, Bev Sherwood, Terri Suit, Bob Tata, Leo Wardrup, Rob Wittman, Tommy Wright)

Almost all the delegates who voted 3 or 4 times AGAINST the abuser fees were Democrats.

9 Delegates Voted 25% Yes (1-3) on Abuser Fees
(Onzlee Ware, Watkins Abbitt, Kris Amundson, Ward Armstrong, Bob Brink, Johnny Joannou, Donald McEachin, Roslyn Tyler, Shannon Valentine)

15 Delegates Voted 0% YES (0-4) on Abuser Fees
(Dan Bowling, Mark Cole, Adam Ebbin, Al Eisenberg, David Englin, Frank Hall, Bob Hull, Dwight Jones, Jennifer McClellan, Ken Melvin, Brian Moran, Melanie Rapp, Jim Shuler, Lionel Spruill, Jeion Ward)

Well, Okay...But Isn't That the Same Thing JMDD Is Doing? (HisRoc - 7/18/2007 9:33:36 PM)
If 15 Democrats in the Senate can be forgiven because they voted for abuser fees that were buried inside a larger transportation omnibus bill, what makes JMDD's position now on abuser fees such a flip-flop?  She delivered the transportation bill that we wanted and now opposes the abuser fees.  I'm afraid that I see two separate standards at work here and it still smacks of Connollyism.
