My Problem with Jim Webb

Watching Sen. Webb on Meet the Press yesterday really skews my reality of what "my" politicians should be like.

Webb is so real, so awesome, so true, and such a great representative of the people, that all others pale by comparison.  He's exactly on point on the war, and he is not afraid to speak the truth.

When will the other politicians learn that at the end of the day it's about us, The People, and not about politics, big business, and their own job security in the House or Senate?

Clever Title!!!! (Dianne - 7/16/2007 9:49:14 AM)
When?  When we, as voters, insist on their doing what we want and then assert our power at the polls!!

Maybe Clever (Matt H - 7/16/2007 10:20:12 AM)
Thanks for your response and I guess I'm being partially clever (I'm usually too aloof to be fully clever).

Still it is somewhat of a problem for the other Dem.s whom I usually support financially - I like getting the most bang for my scarce political buck, and my expectations are that those I support now have to be like Webb.  With this said, I'm very lucky to be in Del. Dave Englin's district, and he is another Webb-like politician who doesn't let the system get in the way of his views and helping us.

Keep posting!!! I like your views/attitude!! (Dianne - 7/16/2007 10:23:17 AM)

I would say the same for Chap and George Barker (Todd Smyth - 7/16/2007 10:24:53 AM)
They both know the issues well and are able to make clear arguments and can not be bullied or cornered with bluffing scare tactics.

Linsey Graham did a great job considering the weak position he was arguing from and Jim trounced him.

Graham was awful (brimur - 7/16/2007 11:10:37 AM)
I found Graham to be screaming and out-of-control. I don't think people who watch Meet The Press appreciated his "Hardball/O'Reilley" approach. It's like he had a few too many cups of coffee.

Graham seemed insane or something. (Lowell - 7/16/2007 11:14:10 AM)
I couldn't believe how bad a job he did.  In contrast, over at "This Week," John Warner was his usual calm, composed self (not that I agree with him, particularly).  Why would the Republicans send out Lindsey Graham to debate Jim Webb, are they into Kamikaze or what?

Graham was doing it for McCain! (Dianne - 7/16/2007 2:03:35 PM)

Shoulder Pat by Webb (Matt H - 7/16/2007 11:16:46 AM)
I nearly tossed up my oatmeal when I saw Sen. Webb put his hand on Graham's shoulder to try to quiet him down.  I absolutely LOVED it, though at first I was kind of shocked.  Webb is a really tough guy - in a good way.

I slightly disagree (teacherken - 7/17/2007 12:36:37 PM)
Jim should have been better prepared for the "have you ever been to Iraq?" question -  he could have really slammed Graham by answer to the effect "You mean like visiting a market with John McCain accompanied by 100 heavily armed soldiers and 3 Blackhawk helicopters?  On that basis you think you know what is going on?"

It should have been an expected challenge, and Jim should have been prepared for it -  Graham's raising it the way he did gave himself a little wiggle room that he should not have had

that said, I am not criticizing Jim.  Merely offering an observation.

That Slightly Concerned Me Too (Matt H - 7/17/2007 3:04:58 PM)
And as a lawyer I'm always trying to think of every possible topic posed to my witnesses prior to his or her testimony.

Still Webb was able to "get in" that Graham was merely given a "dog and pony show" when he was in Iraq.

The topic was a bit irrelevant since regardless of the number of times that Graham went to Iraq, he still is unable to really see what's happening over there (of course this leads to the larger question of what is the truth?).

Yeah, but remember, it was a debate (Catzmaw - 7/17/2007 3:58:33 PM)
and it's darn difficult to remember all your talking points without notes and with both auditory and visual stimuli  happening at the same time.  Webb has little background in  extemporaneous debate and seems far more comfortable with time to ponder and choose his words carefully.  He might have been prepared for the question, but sometimes the thought flies right out of your head when you hear it.

Webb in the Senate...... (lgb30856 - 7/16/2007 1:50:08 PM)
Some friends of mine went to Sen Webb's office in June to talk to him about supporting the DC initiative to give the citizens of DC a vote in congress.
As we were walking toward Sen Webb's office to talk to his staff, who came walking toward us but Jim himself, with some staff.
He looked at us and kind of smiled like he knew why we were there. He went into his office and then came right out.
We all talked a while. He is so calm and considerate.
He then said he was going to vote for the initiative.
He then went into a meeting and we went and talked to his staff.
Nice day.
Great guy. Worked on his campaign on the peninsula.

He's the Real "Straight Talk" Express (Matt H - 7/16/2007 3:55:59 PM)

Webb chats with Wash Times (mkfox - 7/17/2007 3:06:03 AM)
Webb discusses his modern-day Truman Commission and why the Department of Homeland Security was a mistake

Who Would Have (Gordie - 7/17/2007 8:35:08 AM)
ever thought that a 60 year old could mature so much in a year. Since I met him on the campaign trial in Charlottesville, Jim has grown in leaps and bounds. The more I hear him on the floor of the senate and now on Meet the Press, the more I am fascinated. The Country has a true blue patriot.
The more I hear "Don't put words in the soldiers mouths", the more my skin crawls with excitement that the Military and the Nation has some one fighting for justice.

Webb Democrat (Bernie Quigley - 7/17/2007 9:59:28 AM)
You say: " . . . and my expectations are that those I support now have to be like Webb." Dr. Montoya coined the phrase "Webb Democrat." I am a Webb Democrat. Wes Clark brings the Webb Democrat concept to the national stage.
