As I've been getting more involved with the Henrico County Democratic Committee, I've gotten to meet Mr. Tom Herbert a couple of times, including a campaign event last night where he talked to several of his potential constituents about the issues important to him and all of Virginia, namely education, transportation, environmental issues, and health care.  He's running for the House of Delegates in the 72nd District of Virginia, which, sadly, is not my district (no Democrat is running in mine).  However, I will be working to support his campaign, and I will be blogging about this race more in the coming weeks and months.

No doubt about it, it's an uphill struggle.  Jack Reid has been in the position since 1990, running unopposed for much of it, but he is retiring after an unfortunate handgun issue (and you thought Webb had it bad).
Jimmie Massie, an ++ber-conservative, won the Republican primary against more moderate candidates.  He seems to be embarrassed by his own positions, as his website touts nothing more than his proclivity to slash social services and an amorphous support of "education," which seems to be for him a faith-based initiative.  He cites nothing realistic about issues facing Virginia, just useless tripe like "fighting crime" and that old "pro-family" canard, talking points that mean nothing.  He has zero substance (at least none that I can find) and quite frankly would be unrepresentative of the diverse population of Henrico.

In short, yeah, I support Herbert.  I will be serving as the precinct chief for the Mooreland precinct, which is not my district, because every Democrat is important in this state and what happens in Henrico affects all of Virginia.  2008 and 2010 are huge elections for Democrats because of the census and redistricting in 2011, which will hopefully give us a chance to rectify the blatant gerrymandering Republicans have done to the state for years.

So let's get this guy in office!

Great candidate, great message (804dem - 7/16/2007 11:37:48 PM)
I must say that I am extremely impressed with what I have seen from the Herbert campaign so far. I really don't see how Massie stands a chance once people hear more about Herbert. Herbert is a friend to public education while Massie's only endorsement from the Henrico School Board came from James Fiorelli, the same guy accused of accessing pornographic websites with a Henrico County School laptop.

Not to mention that Herbert owns his own biodiesel company and has targeted transportation as a major issue in this campaign. Massie is just another conservative Republican that will pour his own money into his campaign and represent big business interests instead of the people of Virginia.
