The Phony War

Missing from the multiple breathless accounts of Newt Gingrich's meeting with Republican sycophant/bloggers and the RPV faithful in Norfolk on Wednesday evening was any reference to his comments about "the phony war."  No, not that phony war.  Not Bush's Iraq disaster, an all too real conflict based on phony, cooked-up intelligence, a phony State of the Union address, a phony United Nations' speech, and a phony "Coalition of the Willing."  Not the Iraq debacle supported by an unrelenting drumbeat of phony television reports and phony newspaper stories, along with very real retaliation against any patriot who dared to expose the sham.

No, according to Gingrich, we are in a "phony war" because we are only fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Gingrich's phony historical analogy for expanding the conflict:  It's like England's "phony war" against the Nazis under Neville Chamberlain.  According to Gingrich, we have been in the "Fourth World War" for the last six years.  If you want to threaten our survival, we're going to make sure that when this is over, we're still here and you're not.  "I don't think we can afford to just sit around and twiddle our thumbs", he says.

Funny, I've always heard it called the "Twilight War."  And Gingrich's comparison to the Iraq catastrophe is definitely from the Twilight Zone.

3,611 American dead.  26,558 American injured.  Unknown and unknowable Iraqi casualties.  And that's just "twiddling our thumbs."

Newt Gingrich is a scary, scary man.

Newt Gingrich also blamed 40 years of liberalism for the Virginia Tech massacre and for Columbine. It's amazing that he has the gall even to appear in public, let alone open his mouth.  And, given all that has happened in the last few years, it's downright frightening that Republicans are willing to listen to his warmongering trash.

Keep in mind also... (elevandoski - 7/14/2007 11:06:54 AM)
that Newt was brought in by the Republican Party of Virginia to raise funds for its 2007 campaigns, specifically so as to hire a HR coordinated campaign person. How appropriate!  Bring in warmonger in to drum up support for a Nick FemiNazi.
