As Tom Tancredo stood alone on the podium before the NAACP, surrounded by flags in which his fellow Republican candidates were to drape themselves (had they shown up), did Tancredo think: Am I crazy to be here: should I have gotten myself a mental deferment to get out of this forum, just like I did in 1968 to get out of the Vietnam War draft?

Tancredo was in favor of the Vietnam War and spoke in support of the conflict as a Republican student activist. He became eligible to serve in Vietnam After graduating from the University of Northern Colorado in June 1969. Tancredo eventually received a "1-Y" mental health deferment after telling doctors during his physical that he had a history of mental illness and had been treated for depression. Source Wikipedia

Did he also think:  What am I doing here surrounded by blacks and Democratic candidates, when I'd like nothing better than to kick all of them out of the country along with the Hispanic illegals? Too late.  Mr Tancredo was the sole Right wing candidate in a sea of perceived enemies, and though he was willing to do all he can to argue for denying minorities and the poor the rights they deserve, his fellow candidates, believers in kind, beat a strategic retreat from involvment, just as they did in the Viet era.
