Don't Republicans Like Black People?

All of the Republican Presidential candidates, except for Tom Tancredo (R-CO), were too busy to debate in front of the NAACP yesterday.  Now that the immigration debate has cemented all Hispanics as a core Republican constituency (heavy sarcasm), apparently Republicans feel no need to pursue the votes of the African-American community?

Jeffrey Feldman:

The one photo the GOP does not want anyone to see was snapped at yesterday's NAACP GOP Presidential Candidate Forum.  The NAACP invited all 9 Republican candidates to the forum, but only one showed up: Tom Tancredo.  All the Democratic Presidential hopefuls showed up for their forum.

The excuses given by the Republican campaigns mostly had to do with scheduling conflicts--just too busy to make it.

The resulting photo of Tancredo--standing on a stage of empty podiums--sums up the Republican party's commitment to civil rights in America:  the only Republican interested is the guy running to deny immigrant workers their rights.

Why haven't you heard about this?

One has to wonder why this photo was not the lead on every morning show and on the front pages of every morning newspaper in America.

The reason, most likely, is a coordinated effort by Republicans to pressure news agencies to downplay the obvious implications of having 8 out of 9 of their Presidential candidates as "no shows" for a debate at the NAACP.

A new low for Media in America, but there's plenty of time before November 2008.  I expect they'll easily reach new depths of dereliction, eta: about 14 months.

missing from newspapers (VA Breeze - 7/13/2007 12:14:23 PM)
Your post is the first I have heard of this - thank you blog community!

The "liberal" media (Teddy - 7/13/2007 6:52:01 PM)
screws up again. Sigh. Guess the MSM agrees with the Republicans: NAACP is irrelevant, trivial, marginal, and their notes will be suppressed anyway, so why bother. Shouldn't we be calling the MSM? Will Media Matters mention this? By the way, what did Tancredo have to say to the NAACP?

This is why there are blogs (AnonymousIsAWoman - 7/13/2007 7:59:20 PM)
The majority of the MSM long ago abdicated their responsibility to report the news in an unbiased manner.  I don't think it's solely the reporters' faults.  The decision on content rests with editors.  The decision on assignments rests with editors.  And they are accountable to publishers, who are business people interested in profit and the bottom line.

The newspapers long ago decided their mission was not to inform the public but to make profit and curry favor with fellow businesssmen and women.
