About that bow tie...

To bow tie or not to bow tie, that was our question.

Chap Petersen is a known bow tie wearer, and at the prompting of some of our readers I thought I'd put up a poll asking whether or not Chap should keep this look.  Now, we usually don't get into clothing style choices here on RK, but this one seemed like a light hearted question I couldn't pass up.

How did the poll turn out?  Our readers appear split on how they feel about Chap's bow tie, although there was a preference.  While the vote was 43% to 33% in favor of ditching the bow tie, the actual difference was only 8 votes.  So the 10 point victory could be a bit misleading. But it's still a victory.  And nearly 25% spoke up to say they didn't care - but they did care just enough to let us know that they didn't care.

Perhaps the more important question, one which can't be answered by a simple poll, is why people voted the way they did.  For those of you who did vote, or just have a bow tie opinion in general, please join in with your "why" in the comments section.

I don't care... (Rob - 7/9/2007 2:18:52 PM)
As you said, I cared just enough to let you know that I don't care.  But I don't care enough to explain (though I cared enough to tell you that I don't care enough to explain).  ;)

Seriously, I voted that way because it won't matter at all this fall.

Why I voted to ditch it: (kestrel9000 - 7/9/2007 2:19:38 PM)
1) Bow ties remind me of Tucker Carlson.
2) Bow ties remind me of a kind of slimy guy who interviewed me for a job once and spent 4/5ths of the interview pumping me for info about my present employer, his competitor. I finally told him straight out, "That's not why I'm here."
In short, I realize it's subjective, but with me, bow ties give me a negative first impression.
They look....uh......conservative? Un-reality-based?
They make a guy look weaselly, at least from where I sit.
But that's just me.

My vote and why (Eric - 7/9/2007 2:26:35 PM)
I voted that Chap should keep it.

I figure it this way:  Regardless of how I feel about the look of a bow tie (I'm neutral for the record), once a person becomes known for wearing a bow tie that is their look and it's hard to picture them out of it.

Tucker Carlson (boo hiss) is a bow tie guy.  So is one of my college professors - I don't even remember his name but can still remember that bow tie look.  Yep, once you're a bow tie guy, you're a bow tie guy and it's tough to break away.

Chap is clearly established as a bow tie guy (I saw his father with one too, so maybe it even runs in the family), so he should keep it.

men who wear bow ties (presidentialman - 7/9/2007 6:46:02 PM)
the late great Arthur Schlesinger was famous with wearing them, former mayor Anthony Williams wears one, so their not all Tucker Carlsons.
