John Miller is the Candidate in 1st Senate District
Promises Common Sense Solutions

John Miller was declared the Democratic nominee for Virginia's 1st Senate District today.  "I am honored to accept the nomination and I will put my background in education and community service to work for the citizens of the district.  I have been especially encouraged by the strong response to my campaign from Democrats, Independents and Republicans."

"My campaign will be one of ideas not ideology. Working with Republicans, Democrats and Independents, I will offer common sense solutions to the problems faced by the people of our district.  We need moderate voices in Richmond to keep Virginia moving forward," Miller said. " Extremism on the left or right is not constructive to the process.  Politics has become too polarized and rational voices have too often been drowned out by candidates who represent the extreme.  It's time to put people above divisive party politics so we can solve the problems that we face."

Miller is an award-winning journalist who worked for WVEC-TV and WHRO.  He worked in the United States Senate as a top aide to U.S. Senator Paul Trible.  Miller served as Vice President for University Relations at Christopher Newport University and currently is Associate Director of the Virginia Electronic Commerce Technology Center (VECTEC).  He has also been an adjunct professor at CNU.

"My passion is fighting for a world class education for Virginia's children" said Miller.  "Virginia must be a place where all children read at grade levels and learn in safe, modern classrooms.  Teachers must be celebrated, compensated and evaluated for the important work they do.  We must ensure every child reaches their full potential and we do that by providing adequate resources for education, not pledging to cut off funding for public schools."

Miller pledges to address issues that concern the voters throughout his campaign.  "While transportation is a very real problem in our area, improving our transportation system is a state responsibility and should not have been passed down to localities to fix. Imposing a regional authority is not an appropriate solution.  We need a transportation solution that is rational and reasonable.  We must make sure the millions of out-of-state drivers who use Virginia's roads pay their fair share."

Miller is a fiscal conservative and he supports efforts to allow localities more flexibility in giving property tax relief to citizens.  Other top priorities will be health care including improving the quality of care for the elderly and continuing to improve public safety to keep our neighborhoods safe.

Miller is very involved in the community.  He volunteers as an umpire for Warwick Little League and serves on numerous boards, including the Newport News Commission on Youth, The Newport News YMCA, the Downtown Hampton Child Development Center, the Newport News IDA Marketing Committee and People to People.  He has also served as President of Peninsula READS - The Literacy Council and on the board of the Peninsula Food Bank, the Newport News Alliance for Youth and Young Audiences.

Miller lives in Newport News with his wife, Sharron.  They have two children Jenny and son-in-law Mark, and John and daughter-in-law Mary Peyton, and one grandson - Isaac.

I'm especially impressed with his work in the community.  The Commission on Youth, YMCA, IDA, Literacy Council - these are all hard-working types of organizations that give back tremendously to the community.  We have a winner here!!!
