Now THIS Should be an Interesting Meeting

"Sen. DEVOLITES DAVIS, Dels. ALBO, MAY and RUST are on the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, scheduled to meet at 4350 North Fairfax Drive in Arlington. 8:00 PM" on Thursday, July 5, 2007.

You think they might get around to a brief discussion of those $3,000 "abuser fees?"  Hmmm.

can only hope. Wonder if they've gotten alot of pushback from their constituents?

Never (Jim W - 7/3/2007 12:11:25 PM)
The agenda is posted here:

2nd try. (Jim W - 7/3/2007 12:13:50 PM)
Try searching NVTC Commision Meetings.

Way to wait until a lot of us are out of town for Independence Day holidays, folks. (Silence Dogood - 7/3/2007 12:45:10 PM)

Clever, aren't they? (Lowell - 7/3/2007 1:02:44 PM)
Seems like the modus operandus for Republicans in Virginia is to conduct their business out of sight, behind closed doors, and in a way so that the public has no clue what's going on.  Where do you think those "abuser fees" came from?

Here you go again.... (BobSmith - 7/3/2007 4:42:15 PM)
Did you know that NVTC is a BI-PARTISAN group? In fact, my count shows 6 Republicans, at least 11 Democrats, and a handful of independents.  David Snyder is the chairman and Bill Euille is the vice chairman.  Their meetings are held every month on the first Thursday.  This group has nothing to do with the abuser fees, and I think it's laughable that you guys are trying to smear the good Democrats on the panel by saying this group is conducting its business "out of sight" and "behind closed doors."

Will someone please ask JDD (Andrea Chamblee - 7/3/2007 1:02:45 PM)
Ask her to release the list of ICG clients that have a stake in the tunnel/above ground debacle (there is $900 million in federal dollars involved). While you're at it, ask how many ICG clients have testified/scheduled hearings/scheduled meetings  before her husband's House Oversight and Reform Committee.

Kaine hasn't been honest (Concerned Virginian - 7/3/2007 2:21:39 PM)
Recently on WTOP Governor Kaine placed the blame for the new driver abuser fees on Delegates Albo and Rust. However, these abuser fees were promoted greatly by the Governor from the beginning of the Transportation Package negotiations.  I just wanted to set the record straight on who was a vocal supporter of these abuser fees.

From his Aug 28, 2006 Money Committee Address:
Both Houses agree on abuser fees.  The dangerous behavior of unsafe drivers threatens the safety of other drivers and causes accidents that create congestion.  Those drivers should be financially accountable for their actions.
http://www.governor....

From his Jan 10, 2007 State of the Commonwealth address:
Both houses agree that abusive drivers should pay stiffer fines to be used for transportation needs.  To solve our funding dilemma, I have proposed a basic transportation financing package.  Three elements of the package?proper use of existing auto insurance premium taxes, charges to abusive drivers and a commitment to using surplus dollars for transportation?require no new revenues from law-abiding citizens.
http://www.governor....

From his first transportation plan, six days into office 2006:
This plan includes enhanced fees for abusive drivers .
http://www.governor....

From his transportation plan announced Jan 2007:
Imposes an abuser fee on motorists who drive under the influence, drive recklessly, or commit certain other offenses.
http://www.governor....

2006 Legislation introduced at the request of the Governor including SB 722 DMV; assessment of fees on certain drivers, use of fees collected.

So as you can see, Kaine hasn?t been honest with us when he says he knows little about this.

Outstanding (leftofcenter - 7/3/2007 3:09:26 PM)
research. Kaine's hands weren't tied as so many on this blog have said. He knew all along about this and just didn't care. He preferred to go along with his rethug friends-at a great cost to the citizens of this state. But of course many democrats went right along with this also. So it's not ALL Kaine's fault. But since he IS our mighty leader he is responsible.

Gulp.... (Dianne - 7/3/2007 3:45:37 PM)
Did Kaine actually say "he knows little about this"?

Whose message machine? (Silence Dogood - 7/3/2007 4:49:43 PM)
This is probably the third blog I've seen this on this afternoon, word for word.  Who is trying so hard to spin an anti-Kaine message on this, I wonder?

Reasonably escalated (Teddy - 7/4/2007 5:45:36 PM)
abuser fees are not an awful thing per se, folks. It's the outrageously disproportionate escalation which is offensive--- and, possibly, illegal. Using these so-called fees as a crutch to fund a much higher requirement for transportation funds is disproportionate and stupid.

Of course this hoorah's nest is far more the child of the idiotic and tax-craven Assembly Republican cabal that it is the child of Kaine or any Democrat who, out of desperation, voted for it--- so stop this silly effort to smear them along with the Republicans. The transportation bill is what it is: a jerry-built shanty constructed in the usual incompetent manner of today's so-called Republican party. The elephant is stale, out of touch and out of date, and here is more evidence.
