Is There Any Reason We Can't Do This in Virginia?

If New Jersey - home of oil refineries and chemical plants galore - can cut its greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050, is there any reason why Virginia can't do the same?  Check this out:

The [New Jersey] Assembly passed the measure [to slash greenhouse gas emissions] 72-8, and the Senate vote was 36-1. [Gov.] Corzine has said he will sign the bill.

That's nearly unanimous, which is as it should be based on the severity and scientific certainty of this problem.  Now, let's compare to the situation in Virginia:

State lawmakers earlier this year defeated a bill that would have created a special subcommittee to "study the risks and opportunities created in the Commonwealth as a result of the changing climate."

The bill, sponsored by state Del. Adam Ebbin, a Northern Virginia Democrat, died after one committee hearing.

That's right, here in Virginia we can't even STUDY global warming, let alone DO anything about it.  Utterly pathetic, and a direct result of Republican control.  "Died after one committee hearing?"  Gee, I wonder which party controls all the committees in the Virginia General Assembly  Hmmmmm....would that be the Democratic Party?  Uh, I don't THINK so!  So what OTHER party could it be,then?  Maybe the one that we need to toss out on its ass this November?  The party of Dave Albo and the $3,550 traffic "fee?"  Yeah, THAT party.

No reason at all, except political will (Shenandoah Democrat - 6/24/2007 1:52:12 AM)
With the flat earth rethugs dominating the legislature we'll never have an effective response to crucial issues like global climate change. That's one reason why the vote this fall is real important--send progressives to Richmond! I'm afraid our governor also needs a little prodding--who's doing his energy policy? Maybe Tim should just invite Ah-nulled to lunch?
