Berkley High School has been resisting the forced release of Student Directory information to Military Recruiters. The school has instead only released student information for those students after obtained parent/student consent to do so. Students and parents have gone through great lengths to obtain written consent, yeah or nay, reaching over 90% of the students. Unfortunately, they are the only school in the nation taking such as stand.

Is the problem that so far 1,350 of the 1,500 students signed opt out forms prohibiting the district from turning over their data to the Pentagon?

This has earned them the wrath of Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, who has stepped in to put an end to the example they are setting.

This is an issue that the Loudoun County Coalition on Recruiting Issues is actively pursuing and we have had several successes so far. I will discuss them in subsequent entries. Readers can also go to our blog Loudoun Force to get more information on the "No Child Left Behind Act" and Military recruiting in our High Schools.
