Primary Day!

Well, it's finally primary day, and I'm going to go vote in a little while for Frank O'Leary.  Who are you voting for today?  Who do you think is going to win (e.g., in this wild Hanger-Sayre Republican primary)?  If you're a Democrat, who are you rooting for on the Republican side, and vice versa?  Which races are you watching besides the ones in your own community?

Please feel free to use this as an open thread on primary day, 2007.

P.S.  Just a reminder that Ben and I will be on Blog Talk Radio starting at 7 PM to track the results as they come in.  We're hoping to have voters, candidates, etc. calling in with the latest and greatest.  Should be fun...or not! :)

[UPDATE:  I hear that turnout is high in the 74th House of Delegates district, which is Donald McEachin's home turf.  That bodes well for Donald...let's hope!]

Held my nose (Newport News Dem - 6/12/2007 8:48:38 AM)
and I mean I literally held my nose and voted in a GOP primary. I came home and took a shower!

I voted for Stall in the 1st Senate GOP primary. She is a whack job of the first proportion and risking her ascending to the Senate gives pause. On the other hand, this seat is definitely in play should she prevail and this might be the seat that turns the Democrats in the Senate into the majority status!

Interesting tactic... My thinking was just the opposite... (ajpuckett - 6/12/2007 10:30:44 AM)
I voted for Williams, because I don't want to risk punishing a "moderate" senate Republican and installing a flat-earth wacko, because even if Stall wins and the Democrats run a strong candidate, I've read that this is a very conservative district, and Stall might even beat our guy. But I was thrilled to read in the Daily Press today that the Dems are looking to run a candidate in this district. However, if this seat is going to stay GOP, I would rather have Williams than Stall, I think.

That is the risk (Newport News Dem - 6/12/2007 1:21:23 PM)
That Stall may actually win in the fall.

I choose to put the seat "in play" for the fall in hopes of taking over the chamber. Trust me, I understand your point of view and it would be interesting to know how the 1st Senate Democrats broke, my way or yours!

Another reason I voted Williams... (ajpuckett - 6/12/2007 1:41:47 PM)
is that when I went to vote this morning, I wasn't aware that there was even going to be a Dem running for this seat, so I was going in under the assumption that the winner of this primary would be the winner of this seat. Then I "picked up" the Daily Press (online) and saw that the Dems are planning to run someone in this district. So with the knowledge I had this morning, there was no guarantee that I would even be putting it in play by voting for the wacko, so I decided to vote for the less-wacko. I was also thinking about just staying out of it, because voting in GOP primaries makes me feel icky anyway.

Boy oh Boy (Newport News Dem - 6/13/2007 7:47:34 AM)
do we have work to do to keep uber wingnut Stall from mucking up the State Senate with her wingnuttyness!

Be careful what you ask for...........

Did the morning run in Providence Disrict (novamiddleman - 6/12/2007 9:03:07 AM)
Extremely slow at my precient had 2 voters total.  5 Abaentee ballots were also cast from there.

I don't really know if low turnout helps or hurts Charlie Hall.

Low Turnout (blue dawg - 6/12/2007 9:13:34 AM)
Low turnout should help Charlie because he has less name recognition, but that's only true if he's turning out his supporters.

Smyth with the better known name would do better with high turnout because people know less about her but know her name better and so the uneducated voter who knows her name would vote for her.  At least that's my rationale.

Two Votes (Eric - 6/12/2007 9:31:28 AM)
Ouch!  Now that's democracy in action inaction.

Thanks for the report novamiddleman - I hope you voted while you were there.  Or will vote later - for Charlie, of course.  Since this is the election, everyone (Dems, Repubs, and Other) should all vote today - this will be your only chance to have a say in the Providence Supervisors race.

Lambert v. McEachin (danny plaugher - 6/12/2007 9:24:19 AM)
I voted at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Richmond at 9:05am and I was the 61st person.

History of the precinct (danny plaugher - 6/12/2007 9:42:53 AM)
My precinct had 211 voters in 2006 and went for webb 58.8%

I'm going after work. (phriendlyjaime - 6/12/2007 10:38:25 AM)
It'll be interesting tonight....

The Enemy of My Enemy, Is My Friend! (Bubby - 6/12/2007 9:33:59 AM)
Time to roll out to the poll and vote for Scott Sayre!

It is a beautiful day in the Valley.  But not everyone is feeling so expansive, especially in the more restive edges of South SWACistan.  There former champions Senator Macacawitz, and the Representative from MZM Inc have thrown in with the evil Taxman Hanger.

The Chair of the Augusta Atavists (also known as Uber Conservative Republicans) has retreated to his computer and taken to playing with his Star Wars action figures. He's still traumatized about that outing he got from the Richmond Democrat.

And at Forward Operating Base - Pointless Barb, Spank the Donkey has written a short murder mystery starring Republitarian.  The protagonist is provoked to kill by a spat over spit. Apparently the Republitarian didn't Semper Fi to specification.  I'll be damned if I can follow the plot.

But the Staunton Chairperson is hedging her bets like a good poll. She gives Emmett Hanger one more kick in the nuts before she retreats to a call for party unity.  She must have fallen into Wake the Fuck Up Creek. A rare occurrence in SWACistan.

Huzzah! Eddie Gillespie has had enough of these unruly "grassroots" pikers.  He's taken the boat to Bushville, where he will assume the duties of Dan Bartlett - on the USS WorstPresidentEver. Look for a ruckus in the River City as Republicans search for a new Cat Herder. Rumor has it that George Allen will saddle up and join the fray after a long rest at the dude ranch.  Would he really ride against his friends in SWACistan? Stay tuned.  We should expect that Pat Robertson will anoint the eventual winner while standing next to a portrait of the late Reverend Jerry Falwell.

Go Sayre! (Lowell - 6/12/2007 9:46:04 AM)
:)

Hey Bubby! (kestrel9000 - 6/13/2007 5:15:30 AM)
Have you seen my blog for VA-06?

I voted for Frank O'Leary around 8:30 am (Lowell - 6/12/2007 9:52:14 AM)
...and was #17.  Very light turnout, obviously. C'mon people, this is YOUR Democracy, get out there and VOTE!

Providence (Providence Voter - 6/12/2007 10:01:22 AM)
there were 60 voters at my precinct by 7:30....mostly Charlie supporters...

Wow, that's very impressive. (Lowell - 6/12/2007 10:06:58 AM)
If that holds up, we're going to be celebrating tonight! :)

Major upset brewing in Providence? (Lowell - 6/12/2007 11:55:24 AM)
According to Ben, it sure looks that way.

Go Charlie!

I smell a landslide... (HisRock - 6/12/2007 2:26:26 PM)
A heavy voter turn-out would not necessarily favor Smyth.  It could be indicative of voter anger as well as grass roots support for reform.  Be that as it may, my precinct was hitting 200 by lunch time.  Given that the heaviest voting will be after work and multiplying that 200 by 26 precincts, I would say that the voting in Providence District is going to be very heavy for a primary, possibly as high as 10%.
Gosh, I wonder why?
BTW, the public right-of-way at the entrance to my precinct, Nottoway, was littered with about 15 Smyth signs.  Another campaign promise broken by Linda?

1:17 PM Call (pitin - 6/12/2007 1:24:21 PM)
I predict Herrity is going to BURY Stan Reid.

I'd agree (Ambivalent Mumblings - 6/12/2007 1:58:50 PM)
I actually just posted on my site about one of the precincts in this race (actually, Herrity's home precinct.)Based upon what I saw during a few visits to the Newgate polling place today, I'd have to agree that Herrity seems to have a clear lead.

Herrity was never going to be close (novamiddleman - 6/12/2007 2:10:31 PM)
Official Party Structures

Dominating Presence at FCRC (Fairfax County Repub Committee) meetings

Key Endorsements

Name Recognition

Herrity is the next Springfield supervisor

Just voted for Frank O'Leary (Greg - 6/12/2007 6:52:59 PM)
... around 6:30, and was #54 at the Wilson Elementary precinct.

Results from Providence (she votes - 6/12/2007 7:36:12 PM)
Charlie in a landslide at Nottoway precinct...

252 to 122

Hanger wins (Nell - 6/12/2007 9:11:24 PM)
Either a lot of Dems voted in Staunton or the Republican chair isn't very influential -- or both.  The city went big for Hanger.  Ditto in Augusta County, which is where I always figured it would be decided.
