Stafford GOP Waste No Time Going After Pollard

This Friday night at 7:30, the Albert Pollard for State Senate campaign will hold a kick-off event at the grand opening of their new Stafford HQ. Meanwhile, Republicans haven't waisted any time doing what they do best when staring adversity in the face: make stuff up. :)

The GOP nominee for the seat, Richard Stuart, introduced himself to his fellow Republicans recently. He claims that he really is a conservative, despite the fact that he's John Chichester's hand-picked successor. Stuart also said, "Make no mistake, Al Pollard is as liberal as they come." Which of course explains why Mr. Stuart donated money in the past to Democrats like fmr. Gov. Mark Warner and fmr. Delegate....Albert Pollard(!). Uh, yeah.... I know all my conservative Republican friends just loooove giving money to liberal Democrats.

(The Stafford GOP blog even posted a Free-Lance Star article calling Stuart the most moderate of the Republican candidates for the seat, and said that "Pollard is no liberal either; he has run, and won, as a conservative Democrat.")

From the comments: The 6:00pm start time is from a flyer the campaign sent around. It also says to call Crystal with questions at 540-446-0800.
A few years ago when I lived in North Carolina we had a Republican U.S. Senator running for re-election named Lauch Faircloth. He claimed he really wasn't all THAT conservative despite being the hand-picked successor of Jesse Helms. The Democrats nominated some guy named Edwards who always had a smile on his face and could campaign his butt off. The rest, as they say, is history.

For their new Chair, the Stafford Co. GOP elected Susan Stimpson, who ran Jon Myers' unsuccessful Senate run. Despite getting the endorsement of nearly every local elected official, Myers came in a rather distant third out of four candidates in the recent "firehouse" GOP primary for the 28th district Senate seat. Supposedly there are 35,000 Republican or Republican-leaning voters in Stafford County and Myers came up with a whopping 446 votes. Word is, Myers ripping-off Jim Webb's camoflauge truck was her idea too.

Stimpson shouldn't be underestimated though. She's described by a fellow Republican as feisty and aggressive, but also very creative and very smart. She's also worked for Elizabeth Dole in the past, so hopefully she'll lead Stafford Republicans the way Liddy Dole ran the NRSC in the last congress.

What a great mail piece that will be. (Silence Dogood - 6/1/2007 2:56:43 PM)
That's going to make a great mail piece sooner or later.  "Who thinks Al Pollard would be a good choice to represent us in Richmond?  Apparently, just about everybody--as Delegate, Albert Pollard represented us in Richmond so well that even his opponent donated money to his campaign!  Let's send Albert Pollard back to Richmond this November."

It's a great line for deflecting criticism during debates or in the press, too.  "Really?  I'm disappointed to hear you say that, Rich--you didn't think I was too liberal for this district back when you were donating money to my campaign, I can't understand why you'd come out and say such a thing now."

Stuart will be hard-pressed to find a way to go negative during this campaign, and I *hope* unaffiliated Republicans try and get nasty; it just gives Pollard another excuse to say "Even my opponent thinks I'm a great legislator to pick to represent this area in Richmond."

What a load of crap (about Myers and Stimpson etc.).  I know them both, I know all about the primary.  Your numbers on the votes are wrong, by the way.  And you use your numbers to mislead , EVERY candidate got a vote count in the hundreds, it was a very low turnout. And Myers beat Howell and Chichester's handpicked candidate in their own "stronghold" of Stafford. He also nearly beat the initial frontrunner, VanHoy (who had a 20 year headstart), in Stafford and only lost the most populous county in the district by like 8 or 9 votes.  Stuart beat all three by about the same margins in the Northern Neck, and that's only because he is from there, not because of Howell/Chichester.  The Howell/Chichester endorsement should have lent weight in Stafford, but they got spanked there.  Not bad for a first timer with one month to build name recognition.  Secondly, Myers is a Marine combat veteran of Iraq that is well-reguarded by everyone in Stafford as well as by the Marine Corps, where he is well known. Everyone jumped on board his bandwagon because he is a great guy and a great candidate, not due to some dealmaking or scheming.  Also, indicating that he would rip off Webb is assonine. Myers is about as opposite from Jim "the traitor" Webb as you can get.  I have discussed Webb with Myers.  Let me tell you, he is no fan.  I happen to have inside knowledge of the Myers campaign, and the military vehicle in particular.  The truck was offered to him by a friend in town and was neither his nor Stimpson's "idea" as you say.  Myers is a gracious and modest candidate who impressed everyone, your vitriol was completely unwarranted.

You call someone a traitor (Chris Guy - 6/1/2007 7:17:39 PM)
and lecture me about vitirol? My information was from a Republican source. If you don't like it, tough.

When I said weeks ago that the race would come down to Stuart & Van Hoy, a Myers supporter came whining. And who finished 1st and 2nd? Boo hoo.

Go back to the Free Republic with the rest of the Hitler Youth. They miss you.
