What Makes A Conservative Happy?

After McCain criticized Barack Obama's vote on the military spending bill, Obama responded by saying "And if there ever was a reflection of ... [the fact that the course we are on in Iraq is not working] it's the fact that Senator McCain required a flack jacket, ten armored Humvees, two Apache attack helicopters, and 100 soldiers with rifles by his side to stroll through a market in Baghdad just a few weeks ago."

The folks over at the Corner are all giddy over McCain's response:  "By the way, Senator Obama, it's a 'flak' jacket, not a 'flack' jacket."

Isn't this just like McCain and the Corner?  Obama is worried a policy mistake that has resulted in thousands of needless deaths in Iraq; they are worried about grammatical errors!

I think that Gustavus is correct in pointing out the disparity in what each is worried about. This reveals a deeper difference as well --  it wasn't just any term that was mis-spelled, but a military term, and so there is an unspoken, subliminal attack on Obama going on here as well ... that he isn't a 'military man' and hence will be 'soft'.

I'm not interested enough to go looking at conservative forums and blogs, and I haven't seen any news on it, but if that's all McCain can use to retort, then he's faded farther into obscurity than I previously thought.

He also loses by default. :)

There was more, but not worth quoting--stuff about how his position was based on his "experience combined with conversations with military leaders."
