There's a new CBS/New York Times poll out which has some interesting findings.  Here are some highlights:

*72% of Americans believe the country's headed in the wrong direction.

*Only 25% approve of President Bush's handling of foreign policy.  Only 36% approve of his handling of the economy.  Just 23% approve of his handling of Iraq.

*By a 60%-27% margin, Americans disapprove of President Bush's handling of the immigration issue.

*By a 4:1 (43%-11%) margin, Americans believe the economy is getting worse, not better.

*If the Presidential election were held today, 49% would vote for the Democrat and 33% for the Republican.
*Barack Obama (34%-21%) and Rudy Giuliani (34%-25%) have the best favorable/unfavorable ratings among major 2008 candidates.  John McCain and Hillary Clinton are both viewed net unfavorably.

*Among Democratic voters, Hillary Clinton has a big lead, with 46%, compared to 24% for Obama and 14% for Edwards.  By a 57%-36% margin, Democratic voters believe that Clinton can win if nominated.

*Among Republican voters, Rudy Giuliani leads with 36%, followed by John McCain (22%), "other/none" (21%) and Mitt Romney (15%).

*76% of Americans believe that abortion should be available, with only 21% saying it shouldn't be permitted.

*On immigration, 72% believe that America should welcome "all" (24%) or "some" (48%).  Only 24% of Americans believe that "America cannot afford to open its doors to any newcomers."

*61% believe that illegal immigration is a "very serious" problem, with another 30% saying it's "somewhat" serious.  Only 1% say it's "not at all serious."

*62% believe that illegal immigrants should be "given a chance to keep their jobs and eventually apply for legal status."  33% believe illegal immigrants should be deported.

*Overwhelmingly (75%), Americans favor "higher fines and increased enforcement of employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants."

So in other words (Pain - 5/25/2007 3:04:05 PM)
The vast majority of Americans are democrats.  Now, if we can just get them to come out of the closet.... :)

I'm still stunned by the Iraq vote yesterday (The Grey Havens - 5/25/2007 3:43:14 PM)
public opinion is so strongly on our side, I just can't believe the Dems couldn't practice some power brinksmanship instead of powerless blinksmanship.

Dismayed, perhaps, but "stunned?" (Lowell - 5/25/2007 3:52:58 PM)
I mean, seriously, was anyone surprised by what happened yesterday?
