SurveyUSA is out with their latest approval ratings for U.S. Senators.  For Virginia, it's John Warner at a whopping 62%-29% (+33) and Jim Webb at 54%-36% (+18), not bad at all.  Webb continues to be super-popular in NOVA (62%-28%), less so in the Shenandoah (47%-41%). John Warner is popular pretty much everywhere.  The big difference is that John Warner is popular with Democrats (54%-34%), while Jim Webb is still struggling with Republicans (42%-52%).  Still, these are good numbers for both of Virginia's U.S. Senators.

Republicans are still stinging (Pain - 5/24/2007 12:58:20 PM)
from losing last fall, but 54% isn't bad. I think it will continue to rise.

I don't dislike Warner.  At least his rhetoric isn't a thick as his peers, like Lindsay Graham, for example.

FAREWELL TO JOHN WARNER? (Andrea Chamblee - 5/24/2007 2:27:47 PM)
In the Novak echo chamber, this blurb is getting printed and reprinted, blogged and blogged again, sometimes without the question mark (Farewell to John Warner!):

With 80-year-old Republican Sen. John Warner not disclosing until late this year whether he will seek a fifth term in 2008, Rep. Tom Davis is building strong statewide support for the GOP nomination if Warner does not run.

Conservative activists are not happy with the prospective nomination of Davis, who has a lifetime 70 percent American Conservative Union voting record compared to Warner's 81 percent. Davis, who represents a Washington suburban district, would be a strong candidate in populous Northern Virginia (carried by Democrats in their recent statewide victories). Former Gov. Jim Gilmore is a more conservative possibility if he gives up his current campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

A footnote: Former Gov. Mark Warner would be the strongest Democratic candidate for the Senate, but insiders believe he may forego that race to keep himself available as Sen. Hillary Clinton's vice presidential running mate.

WaPos Cilizza moved VA down from a #7 GOP stronghold down one to tie with South Dakota for #8.

8. Virginia (tie): We were expecting Sen. John Warner (R) to make an announcement about his reelection plans this summer, but last week he decided to postpone that decision until September. Ugh. He also said he was "still very interested" in serving another term in the Senate. It's tough to know what Warner will decide, although we still tend to think he will retire. An open seat would make for a terrific race, as former Gov. Mark Warner (D) seems ready to run and would immediately become the frontrunner. Rep. Tom Davis (R) is itching to get into the Senate, but it's not clear that he can avoid a primary fight against a more conservative candidate (Jim Gilmore anyone?). (Previous ranking: 7)

I'd like to see.. (Terry85 - 5/24/2007 3:08:12 PM)
Them ask a few questions of people taking these polls and see who really knows about John Warner and who's just... ya know, not really paying attention.

Webb starting off strong (Matusleo - 5/24/2007 5:05:01 PM)
While I know we'd all like to see Webb's numbers higher than this, we must recognize that he won a very close election last year.  Nearly half the Virginia electorate didn't vote for him!  With that in mind, seeing him in positive territory in every region is definitely good news.  It shows that he's being effective and folks recognize it and appreciate it.

I guess my home region of Southwest VA is included in Shenandoah, though you had better not tell us folks that!  Odd his approval isn't higher there, as we are home to the Fighting Ninth, an area which is traditionally Democratic.
