DEMPAC and YouRoots

I'd like to introduce the Raising Kaine community to a plan that several of us have been working on in the months since the Webb campaign ended. DEMPAC - Democrats for an Enduring Majority PAC - is an offshoot of the Webb alumni group known as Brigades. The main focus of DEMPAC is the development of a new online marketplace of volunteerism known as YouRoots.

DEMPAC is being led by Dave Leichtman (code) and Raising Kaine's own Lowell Feld (Lowell). DEMPAC wants to harness the energy of the Virginia Netroots community that so strongly supported Webb. We also want to continue the momentum of the volunteer outpuring from last year. DEMPAC intends to acheive this goal by creating a new volunteer community website, YouRoots.
Think of YouRoots as a giant resource pool for the state. Campaigns, interest groups, and committees will all have their own space. Volunteers will then be able to find out about any and all volunteer opportunities and filter out the ones that are most pertinent to them. The emphasis is on volunteerism. You are first and foremost a Virginia volunteer - you do not belong to a candidate, and your time and experience are your own and deserve recognition. With these goals in mind, we will begin building YouRoots very soon with the intention of launching the new website shortly after the primaries in June.

DEMPAC is also proud to announce that we've partnered with Raising Kaine to create the best, most useful online community we can. One key aspect of this is to get as much feedback as possible from the RK community. Please read about DEMPAC and YouRoots and provide your comments!

awesome project... (The Grey Havens - 5/22/2007 3:09:52 PM)
did you misspell "harnass"?

Fixed. (code - 5/22/2007 3:17:14 PM)
Sorry, grammar police :P
(or is it grammer... hmmmm)

Very intriguing (brimur - 5/22/2007 3:31:44 PM)
Sounds like a very interesting concept. Will there be a way for volunteer and campaigns to use this resource during primaries?

Unfortunately not (code - 5/22/2007 3:49:27 PM)
Since we're just getting started, it's going to take us a few weeks. And launching it after the primaries is a "natural" milestone. The upside is that it alleviates the issue of dealing with primary candidate support.

Would love to hear more... (Rob - 5/22/2007 7:47:23 PM)
about what you think the RK could do to help get this going.

request: YouRoots pluggin for RK (Hugo Estrada - 5/23/2007 12:00:13 PM)
Since we are already visiting RK, would it be possible for you guys to create a plugging or module for RK that will display a mini YouRoots profile and that links to YouRoots to see the complete one?

And if you guys develop an api for youRoots, I am sure that other developers will create modules for other CMS software out there to display these mini profiles in their sites.

That way people will be going to YouRoots at the same time that they go to their favorite online community, such as RK.

And YouRoots will avoid having problems of lack of activity because participating in RK and other affiliated site will mean that one is participating on YouRoots at the same time.

A great suggestion! (code - 5/23/2007 1:50:07 PM)
And one we're already considering. We'd like accounts on RK to work on both sites. And we'd like to share as much info as we can between sites.
