How Democrats Can Still Lose in 2008

Democrats have all the advantages heading into the 2008 elections - issues, money, numbers of vulnerable seats, you name it.  Really, the only way that Democrats can lose in 2008 is if they self immolate on the altar of "purity."  Specifically, the left wing of the party can, if it so chooses, oppose any Democrat (or fail to work actively for any Democrat) who does not vote EXACTLY the way they want on Iraq.  Case in point:  click here if you want to see a sure-fire recipe for defeat at the polls in November 2008, four more years of Republicans in the White House, continued inaction on global warming, assured disaster in Iraq, a Supreme Court filled with Alitos and Scalias, etc., etc.  Brilliant, huh?  And we thought the boneheads were all on the far right wing of the Republican Party?  Think again...

By the way, I am fully supportive of pushing Democrats towards a progressive ideological stance, but cutting off our noses to spite our faces - for instance, by helping to elect a Republican in Colorado - makes no sense at all.  As Ronald Reagan said, "My 80 percent ally is not my 20 percent enemy."  Democrats need to take the same attitude if they want to be successful, and ultimately to make a difference in all the areas they care about.

I've been visiting DailyKos and they've gone crazy over there.  So many of those folks are just plain naive.  Long threads about how the Democrats have betrayed the progressive left and how they're gonna vote Democrats out of office.  It's just plain stupid and I'm talking Nader-stupid.  For all it's short-comings the Democratic Party is the only hope for progressive thinkers.  Ralph Nader and company put George Bush in the White House the first time.  There were enough Nader votes in Florida to easily hand the election to Gore.  This object lesson should be pointed out to every boneheaded turncoat who rejects the only real political party out there that's pushing progressive ideas.

People need to understand that in a representative government, you don't get everything on your list in the first six months.  If there's any fault I have with the progressive blogoshere, it's the inability to wait for anything and the other gripe I have is so many people who post seem to have no idea how Congress works--how a bill is introduced or anything about the process.  Government in action is not pretty and it's not a pure science where you put something in and it comes out the way you want it to at the end.

We don't have a big enough majority, especially in the Senate to veto-proof a bill.  We need to get out there and elect more Democrats to give us a veto-proof Congress.  That's when we'll see more progressive issues pushed and passed.

Sorry to be so angry on this issue, but this one really pisses me off.  I'm sitting here in Kentucky where there's a really important primary race today and turnout sucks.  If once, just once, all the talking progressives would get up off the couch, put down the bong and vote, maybe we'd get something done.

Great rant, Nick. (beachmom - 5/24/2007 9:28:03 AM)
Look I support Reid/Feingold, and was disappointed when Webb voted no.  But for me, that was the end of the line in this funding fight.  It's OVER.  We need 67 votes to override the veto to get a change in policy.  We don't have those votes.  Senators like Webb aren't there yet, but maybe he'll be there the next go round.

But just because some Dems aren't there yet, doesn't mean they should be thrown under the bus.  And acting all purist like taking people out in a primary is beyond ridiculous.

Here's hoping cooler minds prevail.

I agree. (Susan P. - 5/22/2007 6:38:20 PM)
The bottom line is, we need our country back.  We can work out the details later.  Anybody who doesn't understand this hasn't been paying attention for the last six years.

One reason I have never officially joined the Democratic party (Catzmaw - 5/23/2007 10:45:16 AM)
is this left-wing insistence on ideological purity and the all or nothing attitude.
