SurveyUSA is out with its latest statewide job approval numbers, and Gov. Tim Kaine is riding high.  According to the poll, released yesterday, 67% of Virginians approve of the job Kaine is doing, compared to just 26% who disapprove.  Interestingly, the numbers don't vary much by party affliation - 61% of Republicans, 66% of Independents, and 72% of Democrats approve.  Gun owners approve of Kaine 61%-32%, while "pro-life" people approve by a 61%-31% margin.  Finally, Kaine is popular all over the state: 71% approve in "southeast," 69% in the Shenandoah, 65% in NOVA, and 63% in "central."  You don't get much more popular than that, unless maybe your name is Mark Warner.

By the way, this has got to be good news for Democratic prospects in November, especially with Mr. Popularity (and the other Mr. Popularity, His Former Excellency Mark Warner) out campaigning actively for them.  Maybe Republicans can counter with, uh, uh, uh....George W. Bush?  Dick Cheney?  Bob McDonnell?  Hahahahahahahahaha. :)

you're underestimating the impact that Paul Wolfowitz will have now that he can devote so much free time to his fellow Republicans.

Good point. (Lowell - 5/18/2007 2:55:11 PM)
Maybe if Alberto Gonzales resigns he can come and campaign in Virginia as well? :)

Don't underestimate McDonnell (DanG - 5/18/2007 3:45:58 PM)
He's pretty damned dangerous, especially when it comes to getting the GOP Base into action.

I concur (Matusleo - 5/18/2007 4:02:01 PM)
I would like to point out that we all thought Creigh Deeds was a shoo-in for Attorney General back in '05.  He was leading in the polls, had the right endorsements, came from the right part of the state (Southwest Virginia rules!), and seemed to be making all the right moves.  And then come election night, McDonnell squeaks past and we are all left with our jaws on the floor in shock.

Tim Kaine and Mark Warner are the big men in the room in Virginia, (and Jim Webb!) but we shouldn't ever discount folks like McDonnell.  He won when he shouldn't have, and that's reason enough to be wary.

Good point, but I don't think he's (Lowell - 5/18/2007 4:02:23 PM)
the equivalent of Mark Warner and Tim Kaine.  We'll see..

don't underestimate the opposition (bamboo - 5/18/2007 7:03:05 PM)
It's encouraging that Gov. Kaine has such strong public standing, but it's hardly an adequate defense against the determination of the right-wing GOP to reclaim the governor's mansion. Countless Virginians could be bamboozled into voting for McDonnell or some other unacceptably narrow-minded candidate unless the Dems remain vigilante and smart. '09 which ain't that far away. Now is the time to start planning, unless Warner wants to serve again.

I never ever underestimate the opposition. (Lowell - 5/18/2007 7:15:46 PM)
They may have a skewed political ideology, but that doesn't mean they're not determined to win.
