Republican Dirty Tricks

I received this letter on Saturday...also corroborated by another person I know who lives in Southwest Virginia.  People are reportedly calling the Rex McCarty campaign to complain about this Terry Kilgore/Republican Party dirty trick.  As well they should, because it's disgraceful and wrong to mislead people by telling them they are not properly registered to vote.

September 24, 2005

Dear Sir or Madam:

The Republican National Committee is apparently targeting voters who voted in the 2005 Democratic Primary or possibly all identified Democratic voters with the following pre-recorded message:

"Hello, this is an important election alert.  Our records indicate that you may not be properly registered to vote at this address.  The race for Virginia's next governor will be close.  Every vote will count.  That's why it is so important that you are properly registered to vote.  You'll be receiving a form in the mail in the next couple of days.  Please, take a moment to fill it out and return it by October 11 so you can exercise your right in the upcoming election on November 8.  Paid for and authorized by the Republican National Committee 05077.  Not authorized by any candidate or candidate committee.  www.gop.com"

My wife and another lady in Lee County received the calls.  I checked with a few friends and it has apparently been targeted to several Democrats in Scott and Bland Counties as well.

A friend of mine has the mailer from the RNC if you are interested.

If I recall correctly, this is an old Karl Rove trick.  I also think it was intentional that it was not released until the end of the week to make it more difficult for Democrats to get an injunction against its distribution and also to minimize weekend press.

Please advise if you wish additional information.

Yes, I "wish additional information!"  Anyone who gets one of these dirty tricks phone calls, please e-mail me at poldir@raisingkaine.com

Thanks.
