This is a big poll -- over 2,500 persons interviewed, so the MOE is 2%.  http://online.wsj.co...

Base: Those who would vote in Republican primary or caucus -- the figures on the right are the latest (May) results.

  April May
Rudy Giuliani  39%  38%
John McCain  18%  18%
Fred Thompson  13%  18%
Newt Gingrich  9%  9%
Mitt Romney  14%  8%
Tommy Thompson  1%  2%
Tom Tancredo  1%  2%
Sam Brownback  2%  1%
Ron Paul  1%  1%
Duncan Hunter  1%  1%
Mike Huckabee  1%  1%
Jim Gilmore  *  1%
Chuck Hagel  *  1%

*Less than 0.5%

Will the religious right stay home this election if Rudy gets the nomination?  As we know, Rudy has a few moderate social positions.

Romney is fading -- and Fred Thompson is gaining -- probably because no one knows what Thompson stands for.

Too much of a what if scenario (presidentialman - 5/15/2007 2:34:22 PM)
Take away if Gingrich and Thompson come in. and you'll see Romney's name and numbers rise like the sun.

I'd really like to see Leiberman in these polls (humanfont - 5/15/2007 5:55:58 PM)
The feild is wide open, this could be his chance.  Given that half of these people arn't even declared candidates yet, why not.  Leiberman has the money network, Republicans love him, and he isn't really a democrat anymore.  Bush would hand him the keys to his operation if he'd give a working majority to the republicans in the Senate.

hardly (demo925 - 5/15/2007 8:52:44 PM)
a 1point drop is hardly fading

Romney dropped from 14% to 8%. (PM - 5/15/2007 8:57:36 PM)

Detailed Florida Poll--Romney still low (PM - 5/15/2007 10:16:22 PM)

12. Who is your first choice for the Republican nomination in 2008? (Republicans only)
Rudy Giuliani 32%
John McCain 20%
Fred Thompson 10%
Newt Gingrich 7%
Mitt Romney 5%
Sam Brownback 3%
Tom Tancredo 2%
Mike Huckabee 2%
Ron Paul 2%
Tommy Thompson 1%
Jim Gilmore 1%
Chuck Hagel 1%
Duncan Hunter 1%
Undecided 13%

Here's a figure I've seen in other polls -- and this is ominous for the GOP.

13. Are you satisfied with the current field of announced Republican presidential candidates for 2008? (Republicans only)
Yes 24%
No 47%
Undecided 29%

By comparison, Democrats are much more satisfied with their field:

Yes 62%
No 21%
Undecided 17%

Romney has a real image problem which he's brought on himself, IMO, by changing his views to suit his audience.  So far, the rank and file ain't buying.
