Hillary Ups the Ante

A video up on YouTube with something nice to say about Hillary Clinton? It's true. People have debated for months now as to whether Bill will be an advantage or disadvantage for HRC's campaign. After watching this, I'd have to go with the former.

UPDATE by Lowell: Is Hillary Clinton pulling away?  That's certainly what a new American Research Group poll suggests, with Clinton at 39%, Obama at 22%, and Edwards at 19%.]

No doubt in my mind the Big Dawg will be a huge asset for Hillary... (SaveElmer - 5/14/2007 6:21:29 PM)
As we get closer look for him to play an increasingly more public role, though they have to be careful not to overdo it...

Hillary is doing a great job making her own case so far....

They seem to be playing this just about right so far!

I think pulling away might be overstating it... (SaveElmer - 5/14/2007 7:23:47 PM)
What I do think, and this is born out by the recent Marist poll, is that her supporters are far more committed to her than some thought they would be....

In addition to that, she is the top second choice among Democrats...which makes her even stronger in head to head match ups with Obama or Edwards..

She is in a very strong position right now...which makes me happy, but this is politics...and anything can happen (see Jim Webb!!)

There's a long way to go, but as I always say... (Lowell - 5/14/2007 7:49:05 PM)
...never, EVER underestimate a Clinton!

P.S. I continue to wait for Al Gore's (and/or Wes Clark's) final decision in this race before deciding what to do.

Right there (drmontoya - 5/14/2007 9:32:01 PM)
With you Lowell. Come one Clark and Gore. We need your voice the debate for our future!

Any reason to believe Clark's still considering it? (Greg - 5/14/2007 10:42:56 PM)
I'd almost been assuming that he's decided not to. But given that I'm not on anyone's bandwagon as yet...

Clark hasn't said he won't run (vadem - 5/14/2007 11:06:16 PM)
That's why I believe he's still considering it.  He's a little busy right now trying to bring attention to stopping a war with Iran (see www.stopiranwar.com) and in working with other generals in VoteVets ads.  I'm hopeful that he'll run and bring his knowledge and leadership to the race.  If he were to decide not to run, there's no doubt that he'd let his supporters know.

Ugh (DanG - 5/14/2007 7:48:47 PM)
Congrats, Bill.  This is definitely the greatest apology for cheating of all time.  "I'm sorry I cheated on you, honey.  Let me get you the Democratic Nomination for President!"

Why you dislike Hillary Clinton so much... (Lowell - 5/14/2007 7:51:02 PM)
...is utterly beyond me.  She's no more liberal than Edwards and Obama, probably less so, which means it can't be ideological.  You just don't think she can win, is that it? The thing is, though, the polls have indicated that Hillary Clinton CAN win, so I'm not sure where you're getting that.

I don't think she can win (DanG - 5/14/2007 8:02:45 PM)
At all.  I think she can only go down in the polls.  I think Obama and Edwards will only go up.  She's just got too much baggage.  No candidate matches me socially, but at least Obama and Edwards are more populist on the economic issues (I'm still not cool with NAFTA, and it's always been a smudge on the Clinton Presidency for me).  Plus, I don't like that for the past 20 something years, there has been a Bush or Clinton on the ticket for either party.  New blood, please?

Why do I dislike Hillary?  I have no confidence in her ability to win a general election.  And I'm terrified of letting somebody into the White House who will continue to rape our work force and destroy our military with this horrible war.

Which woman? (MJW - 5/14/2007 8:22:06 PM)
So who does Hillary remind you of - your mother or your ex-wife?

I'm convinced that Hillary's unpopularity has nothing to do with the issues. It has to do with being a strong woman. I think the country is ready for a black president but not a woman (unless she's an airhead.)

It's interesting that some Muslim countries have or had women leaders.

MJW

I can understand your point about wanting a change (Lowell - 5/14/2007 8:33:47 PM)
but I don't get the "rape our work force and destory our military" at all.  On the work force, Hillary Clinton fought for universal health care back in the early 1990s.  That would have been a great help to the workforce.  And as far as the war is concerned, most of the Democratic candidates supported the invasion (Edwards co-sponsored the IWR).  At this point, I see no major difference on Iraq between Clinton, Edwards and Obama.

On your overall point about economic populism, I'd say that Edwards is closest to Jim Webb, at least rhetoricalyl. Obama and Clinton seem very similar to me in terms of their economic positions...neither particularly populist as far as I can tell.  I guess what I don't understand is the INTENSITY of your opposition to Hillary Clinton.  It seems way out of proportion to anything substantive as far as I can tell.

mix-up (DanG - 5/14/2007 9:15:19 PM)
"rape our work force and destory our military"
By that, I meant the Republican I think she would inevitably lose to.  Hillary won't do that, the Republican will.

Since 1976... (kevindruff - 5/15/2007 1:15:11 AM)
Since 1976 either Bob Dole or George Bush has been in the one of the top two positions on the Republican side.... Think about that

1976: Dole, VP
1980: Bush, VP
1984: Bush, VP
1988: Bush, President
1992: Bush, President
1996: Dole, President
2000: Bush, President
2004: Bush, President

Yeah, not comfortable with that either (DanG - 5/15/2007 10:54:53 PM)

I think (blue south - 5/14/2007 8:51:09 PM)
that not only can she not win, but I think she would be a serious drag on candidates throughout the South.

Kerry was a huge drag on candidates in NC in 2004, and if Hillary wont be worse, she will at least be as bad.

I really want a candidate who talks about a 50 state race, and who could be competitive in as many states as possible.  I dont want a candidate who thinks that the only thing that he or she needs to do is be meaner than Kerry and win Ohio and Florida.  I want a candidate that actually wants my vote.

ummm (demo925 - 5/14/2007 11:47:01 PM)
Hillary is up big in General election polls in Ohio and FLorida. what other states in the south do you want to win? do you think states like Mississippi are going to go to a black man?

Im (blue south - 5/15/2007 1:08:33 AM)
an Edwards supporter.  Im glad that you jumped straight on the racism bandwagon though.  Its pretty obvious that the south loves racists, why just last year they chose George Allen over Jim Webb.....or not.  And you can bring up Corker, but everything I have seen says he would have won without that disgusting ad.

Ohio is clearly not in the south, and Florida's voting patterns separate it pretty clearly from the south.  It is its own animal.

And yes, I would like a President who cares about me.  When candidates refuse to campaign somewhere they tell everyone who lives in that place that they are not worth their time.  Anyone who lives in the south can see what happens when we get ignored.  We get the horrific state of rural america, a place with huge job loss, almost no available medical service, etc etc.  Why should we expect Hillary (or anyone else) care about changing that when they say that our support is useless to them in their candidacy?

At least I have a friend (drmontoya - 5/14/2007 9:31:02 PM)
Who works for Hillary. So I am not at a loss if she wins. So far my order is.

Without Gore or Clark

1) Obama
2) Clinton
3) Richardson
4) Edwards
5) Biden

With Gore and Clark

1) Clark
2) Gore
3) Obama
4) Clinton
5) Richardson

I like the bottom group to choose from, If I had my way Gore and Clark would both be running. We deserve to choose from the best and it isn't without them.

I like your (Lowell - 5/14/2007 9:59:12 PM)
Gore and Clark list very much.  Unfortunately, I don't see it happening... :(

That's a pie the sky list (Nick Stump - 5/15/2007 6:30:32 PM)
I don't hear a whisper that Clark is running and I have pretty close ties to VoteVets.  I like Clark, but he's never polled very well and I think people just don't know who he is.

As for Gore, he's the mystery.  I suspect if he saw a good opening, he might take the bait, but he's sure waiting a long-time in these days of early campaigning.

I also like Edwards, especially his thoughts economic fairness, but it looks like he's starting to top out.

Still, it's very early and much will happen, but Hillary seems to be weathering the Obama storm and looks to have some legs.

Best of all, you gotta love Bill Clinton, and we can't underestimate his power when it comes to communicating with voters.  This was a remarkable piece of video, and every time I hear him speak, I curse the amendment that limits presidents to two terms.  Seems like an election would put enough limits on presidential terms and why would we want to lose someone who is doing a good job.  A little too much Democracy for me.

Anyway, I think Hillary would make a fine president.  For me, it's early, but she's certainly as well or better qualified than anyone I see out there, and at some point we have to look a qualifications and not just poll numbers.  Sometimes I feel like we watch the polls to make sure we attach ourselves  to the winner instead of looking at qualifications.  I make that mistake myself sometimes.

Some people also spend WAAAYYY too much time (Lowell - 5/15/2007 7:00:52 PM)
talking about who "can" and "can't win," as if this is etched in stone or something.

moved (demo925 - 5/14/2007 11:51:26 PM)
I was very moved by this video.  THe reason never to underestimate the clintons is because they will win on the issues.  At the end of the day it's HRC's message which is the most mainstream and frankly everything that is in this video speaks to why she should be our next president.
