It seems Republican nominee for Governor Jerry Kilgore is too scared to take a position.

My take on this is that Republicans have a love-hate relationship with Roe v. Wade. They want it overturned, but dread the day it is, because it will force them at the state level to take a strong position on the matter. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, it does not mean abortion is illegal and the conservatives have won--it means the issue is turned to the states, where there is a different battleground altogether.

With the seat of Sandra Day O'Connor to fill, interest groups and people around the nation are asking what will happen to Roe.

Jerry Kilgore was asked about Roe, and it was his floundering response that played a large part in his dismal showing. Asked if he would outlaw abortion if Roe was overturned, he answered feebly that it was a hypothetical question, trying to dodge the question.

Russert asked him whether he would veto if the General Assembly raised taxes. Kilgore, sensing political posturing in the form of grandstanding, jumped for it. He, alas, did not realize that it was a hypothetical question. Kilgore went on the offensive--attacking Tim Russert in an email sent out by campaign manager Ken Hutcheson: "The debate was moderated by Tim Russert, who at every turn, disregarded the agreed upon rules and time limits." Oh, no, Tim Russert asked Jerry Kilgore a question. Oh dear, oh dear, where is the kid glove treatment?

What disturbs me the most is that Kilgore still is refusing to take a stand! Too scared to pick yes or no, he continues to weave and dodge.

Tim Kaine and Russ Potts have explicitly stated they would uphold existing laws on abortion. Kilgore refuses to say.

Jerry? Yes or no? Answer the question, unless you'd rather duck under the covers and hope we don't notice.

I knew this day woul (Alex - 4/4/2006 11:28:12 PM)
I knew this day would come.  The days of pandering to the moral conservative base while holding on to popular opinion have collided.

This could get ugly.

Meanwhile, people like Tim Kaine, who genuinely give a damn about reducing the demand for abortion, are poised to take control of the matter, and people are about to realize this.  And people like Kilgore know this, and fear it.
