Yesterday, we published a list of Virginia endorsers of Hillary Clinton.  Today, we've got a press release from the Edwards campaign, "EDWARDS GAINS SUPPORT OF MORE THAN 40 PROMINENT VIRGINIA DEMOCRATS."  Here it is:

Chapel Hill, North Carolina - Senator John Edwards continues to gain support from people across the country, and today the John Edwards for President campaign announced that more than 40 Virginia Democratic leaders endorsed Edwards for president.  These prominent leaders include state House Democratic Leader Ward Armstrong, numerous state legislators, a former President of the NAACP's Virginia State Caucus and a number of Virginia Democratic Party officials. These leaders join Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Dick Cranwell, who endorsed Edwards in February, in supporting Edwards for President.

"John Edwards will restore our standing in the world and lift up all Americans and Virginians," said Armstrong. "As we work to take back the Virginia state House, I am proud to have Senator Edwards as a partner in bringing hope and prosperity to all Americans."

"When I endorsed John in February, I said that it was because Democrats need to put our best candidate forward in 2008, and that John Edwards was the fastest horse in the race," said Cranwell.  "I am proud to see that so many strong Virginia Democrats agree."

State Senator Janet Howell endorsed Edwards saying, "He has specific plans to end the war, provide universal health care, fight global warming and strengthen the middle class.  Edwards is exactly the kind of leader we need."

Well, it certainly looks like things are heating up in Virginia, with 9 months to go until our primary.  In addition to the Clinton and Edwards endorsers, Governor Kaine and former Lt. Governor Don Beyer have endorsed Barack Obama.  It will be VERY interesting to see who Congressmen Boucher, Moran and Scott, Senator Webb, and former Governor Mark Warner end up endorsing, if anyone.

Very fine looking and diverse list for Edwards there from all over the state.

I would highly doubt that Warner, and Sen. Webb especially, end up endorsing anyone in the primaries though.

state wide candidates (Alice Marshall - 5/8/2007 3:39:20 PM)
I seriously doubt anyone thinking of running statewide, in either 2008 or 2009, will endorse any Presidential candidate. Why pick a fight?

I doubt Jim Moran will endorse anyone because of his brother.

Hmm... (doctormatt06 - 5/8/2007 3:44:50 PM)
Such a tough choice between the three...please Al Gore run!!! RUNNNNNN!!!

UPDATE: Three more Edwards' endorsers (Lowell - 5/8/2007 6:20:26 PM)
According to Arlington County Democratic Committee Chair Peter Roussellot, three more endorsements for John Edwards came in after this press release went out:

*Del. Dan Bowling
*Petersburg Dem. Committee Chair Charlie Cuthbert
*Waynesboro Dem. Committee Chair Marlana Lewis

Peter also commented that the Edwards list was "broader and deeper" than Hillary Clinton's, but that no list of endorsers was a substitute for a strong grassroots campaign, which the Edwards' campaign fully intends to engage in.

Finally, Peter pointed to a trend, whereby "people who went for Jim Webb are tending to go for John Edwards."  Peter explained this by comparing Webb's and Edwards' messages on economic populism and social justice.

Just for fun (jamur - 5/8/2007 6:28:30 PM)
My predictions for who the remaining heavyweights lean toward:

Mark Warner - Hillary Clinton
Jim Webb - Barack Obama
Jim Moran - John Edwards
Rick Boucher -  John Edwards
Bobby Scott - John Edwards

My bets (DanG - 5/8/2007 7:53:02 PM)
Mark Warner - Barack Obama
Jim Webb - No Endorsement
Jim Moran - John Edwards
Rick Boucher - John Edwards
Bobby Scott - No Endorsement
Leslie Byrne - Hillary Clinton

mt thoughts... (novademocrat - 5/8/2007 8:42:30 PM)
Mark Warner - obama, if anyone
Jim Webb - no endorsement
Jim Moran - hillary or obama
Rick Boucher - edwards or no endorsement
Bobby Scott - Barack Obama

Meh (DanG - 5/8/2007 7:42:01 PM)
Better list than Hillary's, but I'd still take Kaine's endorsement over Obama.

Armstrong is nice, and there appear to be a lot of Webb allies here.  Could be good news.

typo; Kaine's endorsement OF Obama (DanG - 5/8/2007 7:51:50 PM)
Still, some impressive names here.  Edwards does have the minority leader and party chair.

edwards list (interestedvoter - 5/9/2007 6:47:34 PM)
Your political naivete is showing if you think a list full of dem activists in magesterial districts and school board members make for a stronger list than Hillary's with her formidable endorsements by the like of Jim Turpin, Sue Swicker, and Mame Reilly. I will take their collective political savvy over the entire list of 40 on Edwards list combined!

(Ghost of A.L. Philpott - 5/8/2007 8:31:31 PM)
Mark Warner - Will not endorse
Jim Webb - Definitely will not endorse
Jim Moran - Mike Gravel
Rick Boucher - Edwards
Bobby Scott - Obama
Leslie Byrne - Clinton

Gravel? (Lowell - 5/8/2007 8:35:41 PM)
That's pretty funny, thanks for the chuckle! :)

PS  "Who ya gonna nuke Barack?!?  Barack?!?"  Ha.

Gravel still has a chance (relawson - 5/9/2007 10:20:12 PM)
But that chance requires mass casualties and scandal.  My mother and sisters live in Anchorage AK.  I suggest he run for local office again.

I think he's just in it for the book deal.

I just want to point out (Jambon - 5/8/2007 9:30:57 PM)
that Senator John Edwards endorsed Senator John Edwards.

Sorry, just felt like saying that :)

Gov. O'Malley for Hillary Clinton? (Lowell - 5/8/2007 11:04:16 PM)
Yes, according to the Hotline blog:

Hillary Clinton's campaign plans a "major campaign announcement" in Annapolis tomorrow, where she likely will pick up the endorsement of MD Gov. Martin O'Malley (D). We say "likely" because Clinton's camp would not comment further, and two O'Malley spokesmen also declined to comment. But when asked recently about the race, O'Malley said that he is "very much inclined to support" Clinton.

Ben Tribbet is a troll/ass (WillieStark - 5/9/2007 1:26:50 PM)
And I will say that to his face.

We have him disrespecting the opinions of a significant portion of the Democratic officials in this state.

Shame on you Ben. Grow up.

(Ghost of A.L. Philpott - 5/9/2007 1:53:44 PM)
where does that fit in here?

Ass is still beating on the Edwards haircut theme (WillieStark - 5/9/2007 2:09:34 PM)
Old news. and silly to begin with.

See this excellent article from media matters about people who care about stuff like that.
