Well, now, this is very interesting.  As we know, Tim Kaine and Don Beyer have endorsed Barack Obama for President, Dickie Cranwell has endorsed John Edwards.  But what about Virginians for Hillary Clinton?  Well, if you're a Hillary supporter, wait no longer; according to Mo Eleithee of the Clinton campaign, "Leading Virginia Officials Endorse Clinton."

Hillary Clinton received the endorsements of leading Virginia officials and community leaders today, illustrating her growing support in the Commonwealth.

"Hillary Clinton has the experience, compassion and vision necessary to get this country back on track," said Lionell Spruill, member of the House of Delegates.

Democratic National Committee Women's Caucus Chair Mame Reiley said, "I am pleased to endorse Hillary Clinton because she is the most qualified candidate to be President. "Having worked a lifetime to ensure that women turn out and vote, it is wonderful to see the enormous excitement she is already generating among women voters across the Commonwealth.

[For a complete list of the endorsers, see the "flip."]

Not one of these names will gather Clinton a significant amount of votes (DanG - 5/7/2007 6:26:55 PM)
Remember, Harris had plenty of lists like this, and it did jack.  The best endorsement so far out of Virginia is Kaine's.  The only other two that really matter are Warner and Webb.  Maybe Leslie Byrne.  But that's about it.

I can't see more than 100 spare votes coming out of all of this.

Just out of curiosity (Lowell - 5/7/2007 6:29:34 PM)
...if you had seen a list like this for John Edwards, what would you have said?

I would've said the same thing (DanG - 5/7/2007 9:06:41 PM)
I support Edwards.  But I will openly admit that I think the only candidate who's gotten an endorsement that really means something thus far is Obama.

Clarification (DanG - 5/7/2007 9:13:45 PM)
By "means something", I mean will turn a signifiant amount of votes.

Don't get me wrong, Edwards got a good endorsement with Cranwell, may help him in terms of donors and such, and a few insiders.  I'd take the Cranwell endorsement over this list, and the Kaine endorsement over both of them combined.

That's just my $.02, take it or leave it.

I agree (drmontoya - 5/7/2007 6:33:08 PM)
Very unimpressed with her list. Obama and Edwards support in Virginia is good.

Had or if Clinton gets Warner, Webb or both.. then we are talking.

So far, Obama has the best and most important Virginia endorsement.

Not even impressed with Mame Reiley? (Lowell - 5/7/2007 6:35:58 PM)
Wow.

It's good... but (drmontoya - 5/7/2007 6:41:02 PM)
You can't compare the State Chair for Edwards and the GOVERNOR of Virginia for Obama.

Sorry.

So if you don't get the Governor... (SaveElmer - 5/7/2007 6:58:25 PM)
Nothing else is worthwhile...

Seems to me there are a few nice catches on  this list!

Sure, nice catches (DanG - 5/7/2007 9:11:39 PM)
Honestly, could help with fundraising and such.  But any vote turners?  Nah.  Nothing that will peak voter interests.  If anything was proven in the Webb/Miller primary, it's that big names turn out voters, and these names here are only big to those who REALLY pay attention to local politics.

Like I said, the endorsements here to go for are Warner, Kaine, Webb, Cranwell, and Byrne.  Two out of those five are gone, and I don't think Webb will endorse anybody.  I bet that Byrne endorses Hillary.  It all comes down to whether or not Warner decides to throw in his $.02.

I have a hard trouble believing.. (novademocrat - 5/8/2007 8:13:15 AM)
That Leslie Byrnes endorsement does anything in Virginia...

But my guess is that Leslie is with Hillary considering that's where Larry is...

No need to be sorry. (Lowell - 5/7/2007 7:04:00 PM)
I'm undecided in this race and waiting for Al Gore... :)

Attaboy. ;) (phriendlyjaime - 5/7/2007 8:11:52 PM)

Could help with Mark (DanG - 5/7/2007 9:07:52 PM)
The only thing impressive about Mame Reiley is that she's close ot Mark Warner.  Could help on that front.

Give it a rest Lowell (Chris Guy - 5/7/2007 11:55:46 PM)
This is a standard campaign press release, and still people have to take shots at her. I stopped trying a long time ago.

The MSM will continue to report imaginary controversies about HRC, and people will continue to believe them.

Agreed. (Arturo - 5/7/2007 7:02:10 PM)
In addition, the endorsements that matter are those of elected officials who will work their butts off for their candidates.  Those are rare.

That's exactly why you shouldn't underestimate this list. (Randy Klear - 5/7/2007 11:59:08 PM)
Lionell Spruill in particular earned himself a seat on the DNC by busting his butt for John Kerry in 2004.  He was so appreciated that Kerry went to Chesapeake to do a fundraiser for him last winter, even though his presidential ambitions were shot and he had nothing to gain.

Spruill, Louise Lucas and Mamie Locke give Clinton serious leverage in the Hampton Roads African-American community.  They are not good news for Obama or Edwards at all.

Impressive List! (k8 - 5/7/2007 7:28:23 PM)
I'm impressed with this list of names.  These are real movers and shakers in Virginia Democratic politics, and that's who you want to be on your team if you're a candidate for president.  They can get things done.

I, too, am a proud Hillary backer, and if she wins the nomination, I'd love to see Bill Richardson as her VP (I like Gore, too, but he's not going to jump in).

Kate Wilder

Interesting list of names (Greg Kane - 5/7/2007 7:57:42 PM)
There is no real reason for Warner to jump into this fray now. Webb may well take his time before showing his hand. Obama is not going to give Webb much of a boost in the Senate... Clinton on the other hand has chits galor.

It would be an interesting turn of events if our populist Senator ultimately goes with Clinton over the populist Obama. It would also set up a very interesting dynamic for Democratic Party politics here in Virginia. Those Webb supporters are still out there and still largely outside of the formal party structure. For its part, the party has not made any real effort to pull them in either.

This could be a fun year.

Don't think Webb will endorse anybody (DanG - 5/7/2007 9:09:03 PM)
I think Webb will it the primary out, an whole-heartedly support whoever wins.  That's just my bet, take it as it is.

Don't think Webb needs a boost from anyone (vadem - 5/7/2007 9:31:19 PM)
He seems to be making his own way quite nicely.  He has his own style and doesn't appear to be one to cash in political chits.  Just my take on it. I see him waiting-what is the advantage of speaking out now?

Agreed (DanG - 5/7/2007 9:35:34 PM)

Politics (Greg Kane - 5/8/2007 9:19:25 AM)
That not the way the Senate works. Nobody does a lone maverick thing and produces much in the Senate. Getting as many of the other 99 as possible produces results. I don't think Webb will turn his nose up for support that will help his agenda.

But I would agree that he may well sit out the primary. Holding back while Kaine went for Obama probably is the best of all worlds - it shows that he is independent and careful. All of the campaigns are still courting him and that puts him in the good position to keep his options open as well as advancing his agenda in the Senate.

Having said all of that, it still would be an interesting turn of events to find Kaine and Webb betting on 2 different horses.

Rather than endorsements of Hillary I want to hear (humanfont - 5/7/2007 8:32:50 PM)
How she's going to help us regain the virginia senate and house in this fall's election.  2008 is the election after the next election.

And I'm sure that (Chris Guy - 5/7/2007 11:58:50 PM)
Edwards, Obama, Richardson, Biden, Dodd are all staying up at night worrying about the '07 election.
