Would We Care if a "Lefty" Had Said What Boortz Said?

I've seen some commentary on the Virginia blogosphere, particularly in this thread at Not Larry Sabato, that claims we Democrats would not call out one of our own - a "lefty" as opposed to a "righty" - for heinous comments like Boortz's.  Well, I can't speak for everyone else, but in my case, the answer is a resounding YES!  For instance, imagine if a left-wing radio talk show host said that American soldiers in Iraq deserved to die because the Iraq War is evil, I personally would be outraged and would go apeshit on their asses.  I would certainly call for them to be fired over that, and would urge their advertisers to stop sponsoring their show.  That just would not be acceptable, and I would not want that person broadcasting their hatefulness over the public airwaves.

I can think of many other examples that I'd find extremely offensive, beyond the pale, etc.  My question for the right-wing Boortz apologists is this: is there anything that a right-wing radio host could say that would be "beyond the pale" for you?  Also, what would you be doing right now if a left-wing radio host had made the Iraq comments above, or some other equivalent in heinousness to Boortz's disgusting remarks on the heroes of Virginia Tech being "wussified?"

...I presume that right wingnuts will go as ballistic over this (Secretary of State Rice to meet with the Syrian Foreign Minister) as they did over this (House Speaker Pelosi meets with the Syrian President).  No?  Gee, I wonder why not (hint:  one has an "R" and the other has a "D" after her name)! :)

A "Lefty" Wouldn't Say What Boortz Did (Susan P. - 5/3/2007 6:52:02 AM)
Hate-mongering is an integral part of right-wing talk radio.  It's not some unintended happenstance that this vitriol spewed from Boortz.  It's business as usual for him, as well as others like Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Malkin, Bill O'Reilly, etc.  This may work for awhile, but eventually it will backfire on these "family values" conservatives.

True, although I've heard some nasty stuff (Lowell - 5/3/2007 7:56:12 AM)
from the left wing as well, particularly the far left wing.  Let's face it, there are crazies on both sides of the political fence.  The question is, why haven't more mainstream conservatives spoken out against Boortz's awful remarks?  Aren't they embarassed?  I would be, if I were still a Republican...

The Reason is... (Matusleo - 5/3/2007 5:07:26 PM)
Lowell,

The reason is that most mainstream conservatives privately agree with Boortz, although they have the 'good sense' not to say so out loud.

I lived in Blacksburg for seven years and even taught classes in Norris Hall, but where I am now, not that many people have personal connections with Virginia Tech.  In the immediate aftermath of the incident, I heard a few people asking the same questions about why people didn't try to stop the shooter (will not write his name!).  That irked me, but as these are my coworkers, I patiently explained my situation, and how none of us know how we'll react to these sorts of situations.  Knowing that I was a Hokie was usually enough to get them to stop spouting nonsense.

That said, a lot of conservatives agree with Boortz.  And most of these folks have never faced danger in their lives, have never faced death, so of course, they're speaking out of their other orifice.

It's the same with every other outrageous things conservatives have said over the years.  They all agree with them, but most of them know to keep their mouths shut on the subject.

I sure hope you're wrong that "a lot" (Lowell - 5/3/2007 5:19:22 PM)
of conservatives agree with Boortz (and hold other "outrageous" beliefs) but simply "know to keep their mouths shut."  Any conservatives out there want to weigh in?

Didn't the "lefties" go bonkers ... (Rob - 5/3/2007 8:12:52 AM)
when Imus (who endorsed Kerry in 2004) made those awful comments about the Rutgers players?

Was Imus a "lefty" himself? (Lowell - 5/3/2007 8:14:36 AM)
That's the issue, whether we'll go after "our own?"

Boortz takes some lefty positions (PM - 5/3/2007 12:52:00 PM)
According to Wikipedia (I'd double check these but I have no interest in reading Boortz):

"He sides with liberals on some social issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage, and civil liberties. *** Boortz supports eliminating the war on drugs***Boortz strongly criticized groups that fought against the removal of Schiavo's feeding tube.***He also creates controversy among conservatives for his negative comments regarding ***the biblical story of creation. Additionally, he causes a stir among some Southerners for his frequent jabs at *** Confederate issues (such as governmental support of the Confederate flag).

On the whole, though, he's a 'hole.
