Martinsville Media Offended by Shannon/Caputo/Shuler Letter

The response by Martinsville Media, which carries Neal "Boor" Boortz's show, is incredible.  You've got to read it to believe it.  Believe it or not, THEY are the ones who are offended by Delegates Shannon, Caputo and Shuler sending them a letter expressing their disgust at Neal Boortz, who called the victims at Virginia Tech wusses for not fighting back harder.  Amazing...how low will the right-wingers go?

Sounds like they need to hear from Martinsville (Catzmaw - 5/2/2007 3:00:32 PM)
Surely there are people of conscience in Martinsville who are offended.  Common, Martinsville, the station says no one's complained.  Time to start making some noise.

Martinsville media offended (artd - 5/2/2007 3:21:13 PM)
You have to remember, you are in the heart of Virgil Goode territory

I happen to be from Martinsville, and I pointed this bit out to Lowell earlier today, finding it pretty interesting. First, I must point out a slight fallacy in the assumption of the last comment. Despite the fact that Martinsville is near the heart of Goode country, what many from NOVA may not realize is that the Martinsville area has seen a good number of Democratic victories of late.
- Martinsville City has gone overwhelmingly for Webb, Kaine, Kerry and Warner in addition to having both a Democratic Delegate and Senator.

- Henry County, which features the more conservative areas of WMVA's broadcasting region, has gone for Kaine in '05 and landslide for Warner in '01 (61-36!).

This, coupled with the fact that I personally know my father (Virginia Tech c/o '76) complained to Mr. Wyatt, makes me doubt the "no complaints" claim.

Be that as it may, Mr. Wyatt also stumbles on another point as I see it. He makes note that his station serves no one from the "Blacksburg communities". I find that interesting, because as a Tech alum myself, I consider myself a lifelong resident of the "Blacksburg communities", as well as a lifelong tie to the school community which suffered the horrible tragedy. There are many Virginia Tech alums and former members of that community living in WMVA's listening area, including current Martinsville Mayor Kimble Reynolds (also chair of the local Hokie Alumni Chapter). This statement just flat out smells bad.

Ha, I knew there were sensible people in Martinsville (Catzmaw - 5/2/2007 5:02:51 PM)
Sounds like you all need to make your voices heard so the station creeps will have to acknowledge the complaint.  I would think that his dismissive comment that the station does not serve the Blacksburg community was rather insulting to folks like you with ties to Va. Tech.

I haven't lived in Martinsville since going to college, my family is still there and I frequently visit. The problem is, the sensible voices don't listen to this station because it carries this SENSATIONAL lineup:
-Boortz
-O'Reilly
-Hannity

Unless this gets drummed up in the Martinsville Bulletin or the Roanoke Times, most folks won't know about it or how to complain.

Boortz (Susan P. - 5/2/2007 5:56:03 PM)
It seems to me they will have to listen if the Tech students and recent alumni take this up.  Does anybody know if this is on facebook?  It should be added as a group.

Facebook Groups (Susan P. - 5/2/2007 9:15:27 PM)

They also add comments by Michelle Malkin and others.  Remember, these comments were made before some family members had been notified that their loved ones were dead or injured.  These are our family values conservatives.

Offensive rantings (noonan - 5/2/2007 6:04:09 PM)
I ask you to imagine the amount of outrage that would be coming from conservatives across the country (and on Fox News, no less), if a liberal commentator blamed conservatism or a conservative culture for a massacre like this.  It is unspeakable, and Governor Kaine is right when he says that it doesn't go with the facts.  These radio stations should stop disrespecting the honor of the heroes, both alive and dead, who DID fight Cho Seung-Hui and saved lives at Virginia Tech.

Wrong on several counts, (Teddy - 5/2/2007 7:59:00 PM)
Mr. Boortz. As I understand it, the students were never lined up and waiting to be shot, so that tender little picture of bovine acdeptance of their fate is totally wrong. A mad man bursts into a quiet classrooms, begins shooting. He leaves (to slog more bullets into his weapon???), the students shut the door, hold it closed with their feet to keep him from returning, and he shoots through the door, unable to get back inside--- some of the wussy students holding the door were female. A professor stands in the doorway and keeps the gunman out of the classroom, the adult professor dies, the others escape.  How cowardly is that? In a civil society the citizens have a right to have confidence in the security of their lives when in pursuit of peaceful endeavors, like attending school.  Only in an utterly barbaric social system should everyone be armed at all times.

A recent article in the Sunday Post, describing the Swiss system which arms its citizenry so they have an ever-ready militia, told the story of an insane gunman who killed 14 in the town of Zug in similar circumstances. Everyone is a soldier in Switzerland, yet still the slaughter occurred, giving lie to the smug assumptions of conservative talkies that the answer to random violence is to arm everyone. Only in America... and Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, and so on, are weapons so widespread and violence so extreme.

These neocons, who are acolytes and proselizers for the Dark Ages, keep bringing up the passengers of Flight 90 who, it is assumed, rushed the armed hijackers of their airplane. Let's be sure we know exactly how that happened, and let's remember that, by the time that happened, they had, through cell phone conversations, already learned of the other three airplanes hitting their targets--- so they were in some measure forewarned, unlike the youths in the classrooms.

Mr. Boortz is, like most of his ilk, preening himself for being "politically incorrect," making a self-righteous ass out of himself, and should be dismissed.

Another example (Glant - 5/2/2007 10:19:04 PM)
Teddy

Another example to support your argument was the recent death of a NY State Trooper during a firefight with a suspect in the shooting of another Trooper.  The trooper and his fellow officers were highly trained, and still this awful accident occured.  Imagine how much greater is the chance for an accident when the people with guns have little or no training.

Boortz Hampton Rds Update (PM - 5/5/2007 9:27:10 AM)
http://www.dailypres...

According to the Daily Press out of Hampton Roads, Boortz's show is carried locally on WNIS-AM 790.  (AM?  So the audience demographic is 17 listeners?)

As most will recall, Boortz criticized Seung-Hui Cho's victims for not charging at him. When a listener called the show and said he was offended by the comments, Boortz mocked him on the air. Boortz later half-apologized: "I wasn't angry on what I was saying ... just with how I was saying it."

Lisa Sinclair, general manager of WNIS-AM 790, said Tuesday afternoon that she had not seen the delegates' letter, but she made it clear that, while she disagreed with Boortz's comments, she had no intention of pulling his show.

"He came on and apologized, at least somewhat," Sinclair said.

"In the heat of the moment, he was giving his perspective," she said. "This is still a free country, and we are still allowed to speak freely as far as I know."

Sinclair said she was aware of at least a small handful of listeners who called WNIS to complain about Boortz's comments.

So, another station will continue to profit from venom.

GMU Student Senate Blasts Boortz (PM - 5/7/2007 4:44:47 PM)

In the last meeting of the year the 27th student senate passed a resolution to condemn Neil Boortz for his disrespectful words about the victims of Virginia Tech and calling on all radio station in Virginia to boycott Boortz.

Good for them.
