Arlington School Board Election this Saturday

Just a "heads up" that this Saturday, the Arlington County Democrats are holding a caucus for School Board.  The election is for the Democratic Party's seal of approval, which essentially guarantees that the winner will be on the school board this November in overwhelmingly "blue" Arlington.  The event will be held at Kenmore Middle School, 200 S Carlin Springs Road, from 11 am to 7 pm.  The candidates are Mark Dorfman and Abby Raphael.  I am not endorsing anyone, because I honestly think that either of the candidates would be a fine addition to the Board, but I urge all Arlingtonians who care about the School Board to vote on Saturday.

School Board Race (middleagemom - 5/2/2007 9:45:31 AM)
I just wanted to let people know why I am supporting Abby Raphael for School Board in this Saturday's election.  Abby was the PTA President at Arlington Science Focus School (ASFS) from 2004-2006, and I worked closely with her those years as the ASFS PTA Secretary.  Abby was a terrific PTA President, guiding us through the School Boundary process the first year and spearheading our "Fit Kids, Ready to Learn" program the second year.  Abby has also been involved in a number of county-wide committees that work with the School Board.  Abby is a former Arlington County prosecutor, and graduated from the University of Virginia Law School.  She actually enjoys reading the School Board's budget documents!  I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Abby, and I know she will dedicate herself to the School Board with the same energy and enthusiasm she showed as the ASFS PTA President.

One thing that impressed me about Mark Dorfman (Lowell - 5/2/2007 10:29:36 AM)
was his strong commitment to "in-school recycling" and "teach[ing] enviromental principles by committing to earn LEED  certification of all new and remodeled schools." Where does Abby Raphael stand on environmental leadership by the Arlington County school system?  Thanks.

I know that Abby has a strong commitment to recycling and energy conservation in schools.  She has been discussing how the schools can do much more to recycle, particularly items from the cafeteria, like the disposable trays, milk cartons, and cans.  What good does it do to teach students about the environment if we don't practice what we preach?  She also supports the school system pursuing LEED certification for our new buildings.

I knew Abby as a prosecutor in Arlington (Catzmaw - 5/2/2007 10:34:16 AM)
She was always honest and straightforward in her dealings with defense counsel and willing to discuss possible dispositions in cases.  She would do very well on the school board.

I am supporting Abby in the Arlington School Board Caucus on Saturday 5/5. Abby will be a fine member of the Arlington School Board.  Abby has children in Arlington schools.  She is on several commmittees that deal with Arlington schools, and she is a PTA president.  She is a community leader and an attorney.  I worked with Abby on Sally Baird's successful School Board campaign last year.  I know her as a tireless and focused person who has a strong work ethic, excellent organizational skills, knows the issues and is one super human being.
