NY GOP MIA

Want more evidence of how the term "Northeast Republican" will soon become an oxymoron? The New York State Republican Party is holding a fundraiser "to put the near-bankrupt state GOP on a sound financial footing." Originally hoping to rake in upwards of $3 million, organizers are saying that they'll be lucky to raise $1 million at the event. Not only that but Republican NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg is blowing it off. Does anyone else remember the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner a few months ago here in Virginia? The numbers were off the freakin' charts. Can you imagine if Richmond Mayor Douglas Wilder pulled a Bloomberg and didn't bother to show? Me either. Chin up Northeast Republicans, you've still got Joe Lieberman.

Wilder has rarely come to the J-J (cvllelaw - 5/1/2007 2:08:01 AM)
Looking back over recent years, I think I am correct that this year is the first time in at least 5 that Wilder has come to the J-J.  Wilder came this time because it was Barack Obama.

He's right. (vadem - 5/1/2007 6:43:00 AM)
The Mayor hasn't been one of the elected dignitaries at any of the last 4 events I've attended.

Agreed, but it doesn't seem to matter (Lowell - 5/1/2007 6:46:34 AM)
in Wilder's case.  That guy has always done his own thing and it's never really hurt him as far as I can tell.  Not sure about Bloomberg or Giuliani (by the way, is Rudy blowing it off too...you've got a picture of him there but you don't mention him in the article).

I mean Chris (Lowell - 5/1/2007 6:46:59 AM)
when I say "you."

Article says (blue south - 5/1/2007 8:16:33 AM)
The Article says Julie-ani is a featured speaker and McCain has the keynote.

"A lot of upstate chairmen don't want to do anything that would help Mondello, and that includes buying tickets for the dinner," said a high-level GOP operative.
Making matters worse is Giuliani's anger at being relegated to second fiddle to McCain at his hometown party's annual dinner - the result of his staff's failure to quickly respond to Mondello's early and repeated offers that he serve as the keynote speaker
