Mark Warner Heading for the Senate?

According to columnist Margaret Edds in today's PilotOnline, Mark Warner is "like a prize racehorse confined to the stables...is itching to get back on the track."  The political track, of course.  The question is, which track exactly - US Senate in 2008 or Virginia Governor in 2009?  According to Edds, who says she has a "sixth sense" for this type of thing after "decades watching politicians up close:"

Just a hunch, but listening to Warner talk, his present passion tilts toward the national arena. Yes, he called the Virginia governorship "the best job in America." But he spoke most convincingly about India and China, not Richmond and Grundy. His principal theme: We are at "a critical time in our nation's history... a moment of remarkable, transformational change," and the future belongs to leaders who will "make a bold audacious 'ask' of the American people."

Speaking "most convincingly about India and China" sure makes it sound like Warner's itching to move up to the national scene.  That means, obviously, the U.S. Senate, unless the Democratic Presidential nominee selects him as their running mate.  Meanwhile, Warner is vowing

With more than $1 million in his federal Forward Together political-action purse and about $400,000 in his state political account, Warner promised a "potentially unprecedented" effort to elect Democrats. From a governor who left office in early 2006 with an 80 percent approval rating, and who's done nothing to diminish that popularity since, those are fighting words.

In other words, Virginia Republicans had better watch out this year.  Before Mark Warner gets to take on global warming, national education policy, and all that other interesting stuff in the U.S. Senate, he's got a little unfinished business to take care of right here in the Commonwealth.

5th Dinner (Gordie - 4/15/2007 8:17:43 AM)
Mark spoke for a length of time and covered many subjects. Yes  the vibes are he wants Nation office. With 3 front runners for Pres. it would be difficult to wait for a VP offer, unless all 3 have asked him. Of course with the Feb.5 primaries and the possiblity of knowing who the Pres. candidate will be, I guess Mark could wait till that time to make up his mind. Feb.-Mar. is not too late for a Senate race. From his speach and some comments, I got the impression he is ready to get back on the trail and with his 5 trips abroad, he has built up support for National office.

With John W. wishey washey voting record and spin, it is my guess goodbye to the old man. He needs to retire anyway. He no longer supports the troops. He supports political party, rather then the troops.

One dream scenario (PM - 4/15/2007 8:57:59 AM)
George Allen and Tom Davis square off in a GOP primary for the Senate, as John "I'm right on the issues once every fifth Tuesday" Warner retires.  Allen loses in an expensive primary, forever ending his political career.  Tom Davis faces Mark Warner, and Davis is beaten decisively.  That leaves Virginia's biggest GOP star as  Bob Marshall?  Eric Cantor?  Virgil Goode?  At the same time, Jim Webb is elected Vice-President (with John Bar-Clinton being elected President.)  Tim Kaine picks Donald McEachin to replace Webb.

Feel free to substitute names.

Just for laughs this gray morning:

If Mark Warner runs for Senate.;. (Lowell - 4/15/2007 11:33:55 AM)
...how do you see the 2009 Governor's race shaping up?

Two Words (AnonymousIsAWoman - 4/15/2007 7:24:38 PM)
Brian Moran, who, after all, didn't hire Maime Reilley for nothing.

The Warner-Kaine-Warner-Kaine Era (adilla - 4/15/2007 8:29:46 PM)
or better yet: Then Senator Mark Warner runs for it, wins it (therby becoming governor once again), and than appoints then outgoing goernor Tim Kaine to his Senate seat!!!

Please pray for a Warner-Kaine-Warner-Kaine.

That's what (Gordie - 4/16/2007 9:46:57 AM)
