GOP Cash On Hand Numbers: McCain in Big Trouble?

Courtesy of the FEC's disclosure database, the official 1Q07 fundraising numbers are trickling in...

Giuliani: $11,949,734
Romney: $11,863,652
McCain: $5,180,799 (note: McCain also reported $1,812,636 in debt; Giuliani and Romney had basically no debt to speak of)

In other words, John McCain's in big trouble unless he turns this situation around - and fast!  Of course, his campaign is putting on a brave face and trying to claim that they've turned things around on the money front. But the fact is that McCain is lagging FAR behind his two main rivals for the Republican Presidential nomination on the financial front.  At this rate, McCain may not be able to afford the $3 per gallon to fill up his "Straight Talk Express" with gas.  Of course, McCain abandoned "Straight Talk" a few years ago when he started flip flopping, backtracking, and embracing George W. Bush, so that seems appropriate somehow.

McCain is banking on a win in Iraq to pull it off in 08. I think this story, if at all true about the fragile government in Iraq is not good for the people of Iraq or their future without further civil war.  I think if Iraq goes into total civil war, aka their government falls, McCain too is a goner.  I think Hillary and Obama stand a very good chance of beating Rudy and Mitt.  Not counting my chickens, but a perfect storm is forming over the Republican's head.

Fred Thompson could be the key to this race (Chris Guy - 4/15/2007 10:33:27 PM)
He supported McCain in 2000. If he becomes a candidate himself, it could hurt McCain's cause. Or he could be building a coalition to, at some point, throw their support behind McCain.
