How Can You Tell Dick Cheney is Lying? His Lips Are Moving.

2. Cheney claims that "Today, on some of the most critical issues facing the country, the new Democratic majority resembles nothing so much as that old Party of the early 1970s."
Uh, no.  Actually, today's Democratic Party is totally within the mainstream of American majority public opinion on issues ranging from Iraq to taxes to health care to the environment.  It is, sadly, today's Republican Party that has veered far, FAR outside the mainstream of American history, moving to override historic checks and balances, treating our Constitution with contempt, violating international treaties at will, condoning and even encouraging corruption to the core, than any party (arguably) in American history. But nice try to shift the blame away from your own Party's extremism by trying to tarnish the Democratic Party, the one that stands for "people like us."

3. Cheney claims that Democrats are pushing "the largest tax increase in American history."
That is simply laughable.  At most, what Democrats are talking about is rolling back the Bush tax cuts on the richest 1% or 2% of Americans in order to pay for things like the war in Iraq, which could end up costing us $1 trillion when all is said and done, plus restore our budgetary situation to the healthy situation inherited from the Clinton Administration, but quickly squandered by the Bushies in order to reward mega-millionaires.

4. Cheney claims that "the new Congress has already earned a place in the big-spending hall of fame."
I'll tell you, it takes chutzpah to lie like this.  After 6 years of Republican rule, during which time Federal spending increased at record ratest, fueled by the Iraq War, plus earmarks and other "pork barrel spending" BY REPUBLICANS, Cheney is claiming that a Democratically controlled Congress that has clamped down on earmarks and that is trying to end the war in Iraq has "earned a place in the big-spending hall of fame."  That's a joke, but what's not a joke is that Dick Cheney has earned a place in the big-LIE hall of fame." (remember WMD, the supposed Iraq-Al Qaeda connection, uranium from Niger, conservation is a "peronsal virtue," the Cheney Energy Task Force, etc., etc?)

5. Disgracefully, and against all evidence to the contrary, Cheney once again ties 9/11 together with the war in Iraq: "a war that was declared against us by jihadists, a war in which the United States went on offense after 9/11, a war whose central front, in the opinion and actions of the enemy, is Iraq."
This one's almost not even worth refuting anymore.  It's already been completely slammed so many times, I don't even konw where to start. The question is, why does Cheney keep repeating this lie, over and over again, that somehow the war in Iraq has anything to do with 9/11, whose attackers  came overwhelmingly from Saudi Arabia (15 of 19).  So Dick, why aren't we taking action against your pals in Saudi if you're so concerned about state support for terrorism?  And please don't tell me the Saudi royal family didn't have any clue what its national, Osama bin Laden, was up to when it was bush supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan - not to mention extremist, anti-Western, anti-Christian, anti-Semitic "madrasas" all over the world.

6. Cheney argues that "An early sign of unseriousness was the comment by Howard Dean, now the party chairman, that the capture of Saddam Hussein did nothing to make America safer."
So Dick, please explain to us how the capture of Saddam Hussein made America safer.  Great, Saddam's dead, but how is America any safer than when he was alive?  Please explain, citing facts and evidence, not your usual hysterical, over-the-top rhetorical devices.

7. Cheney says that "It is strange enough that the Speaker should do anything to anything to undermine America's careful, and successful, multilateral effort to isolate the Syrian regime."
God, whwere do I start?  This Administration has had a "careful," "successful," and "multilateral" effort on Syria?  Should I just cue the laugh track now?  And Speaker Pelosi talking to President Assad, after Frank Wolf and other Republicans did so, and after Bush Administration officials reached a deal with "Axis of Evil" member North Korea, is supposed to be something particularly out-of-line and heinous?  What on earth is Cheney talking about?  Does nayone understand a word this guy says?

8. Cheney implies, disgracefully once again, that Democrats don't back our troops, saying "Both political parties, both elected branches, both houses of Congress need to unite and back up our military 100 percent..."
This is McCarthyism, plain and simple.  It is unworthy of the Vice President of the United States.  If Dick Cheney felt any shame, he should be ashamed at statements like this.  But he doesn't, and he doesn't.

9. I could go on and on.  As I asked in the title, "How can you tell Dick Cheney is lying?  His lips are moving."  Keep that in mind the next time Darth Cheney makes a speech.
