Giuliani Was "Clarifying" on Abortion Back in 1989

From the New York Times of August 4, 1989:

Rudolph W. Giuliani, clarifying once again his stance on abortion, completely accepted yesterday women's ''right of choice'' on abortion, except for a personal disclaimer.

Mr. Giuliani, who is seeking the Republican nomination for mayor of New York City, began the year advocating that the United States Supreme Court overturn the Roe v. Wade decision, which legalized abortion in 1973. Yesterday, he said he ''will oppose making abortion illegal.'' As late as last month, he said he had no position on what the Governor or the State Legislature should do about abortion.

Mr. Giuliani's statement yesterday was viewed as a ''flip-flop'' by Democratic mayoral contenders.

Does any of this sound familiar?  In the next "clarification," watch as the straight-talking former mayor explains how his flip-flops might seem bad, but they're nothing compared to John Kerry's.  And furthermore, Giuliani doesn't wind surf.  So there!

P.S.  Brilliant strategy by another "leading" Republican 2008 candidate, John McCain, to stake his entire candidacy on the "embracing the unpopular conflict [in Iraq] with renewed vigor." That should work real well.  Not.

A Rudy-Mitt debate (PM - 4/7/2007 8:26:03 AM)
The mind boggles

At some point in the debate, as they both try to explain their jack knifing positions while accusing each other of flip-flopping, we might have a scene like this:
