NEW YORK - The major seminary and flagship institution of Conservative Judaism said Monday it will start accepting openly gay and lesbian students, after scholars who interpret Jewish law for the movement voted to allow it.***

This is huge news for gay rights.  Now you have another major branch of Judaism -- you know, the guys who wrote the severe rules of Leviticus -- saying open gays are permitted into Jewish Theological Seminary.

The Conservative branch holds the middle ground in American Judaism, adhering to tradition while allowing some change for modern circumstances.  The larger and more liberal Reform Jewish movement, as well as the smaller Reconstructionist wing, allow gays to become rabbis; the Orthodox branch bars gays and women from ordination.

Soon -- maybe a few decades? -- only a few dinosaurs will continue practicing homophobia.

That's wonderful news.  Thanks for sharing.  You know I was just reading a poll which said that a good majority of Americans -- I think it was in the sixty percent range -- supported people who are openly gay serving in the military.

You would think that people who would die for their country --- let me phrase that another way -- people who would put their lives on the line to protect you, me, anyone regardless of religious belief -- you would think the government would allow them to marry.

Does not seem very fair to me.

This is good news! (lauralib - 3/26/2007 3:01:23 PM)
I guess change is slow but DOES happen.
