The Roanoke Times walked away with more than a half dozen prizes and honorable mentions in Best of Photojournalism 2007 - the contest designed by photojournalists for photojournalists.

Check out their winning entries!  Here are links to their award winning photos, but the rest are certainly worth checking out. The slideshow start button isn't as obvious as it should be; you'll need to click just to the left of the bar to start the slideshows.

Roanoke took both first and third place in news audio slideshow.

Roanoke also won third place in the features photo slideshow, third place in audio slide show, honorable mention in the Enterprise Picture Story category,  and honorable mention in Conceptual Photographic Illustration.

There were a couple of other honorable mentions for Virginia newspapers. Rich-Joseph Facun of The Virginian-Pilot received an honorable mention in the domestic news division, and in team sports action Mark Gormus Richmond Times-Dispatch also won honorable mention. I hope I didn't miss anyone!

Though not from Virginia, this one is a must see.

One reason they keep coming (Teddy - 3/24/2007 11:14:16 PM)
of course is the belief that they can earn enough money in the U.S. simply to live, and the reason they cannot accomplish that in Mexico is often that NAFTA and globalisation have destroyed the Mexican economy--- our agriculture, protected by NAFTA and World Bank requirements, has ruined small farmers in third world countries the world over. Also, there are reports that American demand for corn to produce ethanol has raised the price of food corn beyond the reach of the poorer peons in Mexico. In other words, we will continue to have a flood of illegals until we figure out how to improve the local economies in Latin America to the point where there is no longer any need for the young people to "go north."

The truth is, we must get rid of the republican economic theory of jungle capitalism, and examine the social costs of over-emphasizing profits and financial manipulation.  Money valued over people is the be-all and end-all of Wall Street dominated economic theories, we have forgot that the reason there is economic activity of any sort is to enable us to live better. Starting a new business, the entrepreneur hopes to make a profit and should be entitled to do so, because he is providing an improvemed product or service for his fellow man.

Somehow his making a profit has obliterated the basic reason for that product or service, and squeezing constantly increased profits out of every business now dominates enterprise overwhelmingly, which explains global financial deals, spinoffs, acquisitions and mergers that produce no new products, just enhance quarterly profits solely in order to raise the price of the company's stock.

How many times have you heard "we're making this change to better serve you" and you instinctively know things are going to get worse and more expensive, not better and cheaper?

A wealth of wisdom (Kathy Gerber - 3/25/2007 3:20:37 PM)
..in your words there, Teddy. Plenty to think about - in a way profit is isolated in a way that takes capitalism to an undesirable extreme.

During Sunshine Week:

Shedding light on concealed handguns

By Christian Trejbal

Today is the start of Sunshine Week, the annual week in which we reflect on the importance of open government and public records. To mark the occasion, I want to take you on an excursion into freedom of information land. We're going to find out who in the New River Valley has a concealed handgun permit.

The list of every CCH permit holder in Virginia was published, for a while, on the RT web site.  That includes judges, parole officers, LEO's, and people who had filed for protective orders.

The jist of the complete article by Mr. Trejbal, the columnist who wrote the story about Virginia 'sunshine' laws and who obtained and helped publish the CHP holder list, was that it was important for everyone to know who may be packing. He compared CCH holders to sex offenders.  The list was pulled within a few days however the damage had already been done.

CNN is interviewing Virginia CCH permit holders for a Paula Zahn special report this Monday evening.  Thus far the Roanoke Times has refused to be interviewed by CNN.

Those are public records, correct? (Kathy Gerber - 3/25/2007 3:25:22 PM)
I wouldn't rely too heavily on bureaucratic inefficiencies and general indifference for anonymity much less privacy.
