Job Opportunity: Long Hours, Decent Pay, Report Directly to White House...

As you've probably heard by now, the Politico has reported that the Bush White House is seeking replacement candidates for Attorney General Alberto "Going, Going, Gone-zales."  The Politico reports that "support [for Gonzalez] among GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill has collapsed."  Possible replacements mentioned by The Politico include Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, White House anti-terrorism coordinator Frances Townsend, Securities and Exchange Committee Chairman Chris Cox, former Attorney General William P. Barr, and several others.

But how about yourself?  Seriously, if you're interested in a job with long hours, decent pay, and a hotline directly to Dubya's office ("Mr. President, any scandals you want me to cover up today?"), why not apply for this job?  I mean, what's the worst that could happen, they'll ship you off to Gitmo for your insouciance?  Heh.  Anyway, if you're interested, send your resume pronto to:

Dick Cheney
Vice President and Grand Inquisitor
Halliburton© White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave., NW
Washington, DC  20500

Oh, in your cover letter, you might talk about how you'd deal with this:

In a sign of Republican despair, GOP political strategists on Capitol Hill said that it is too late for Gonzales' departure to head off a full-scale Democratic investigation into the motives and timing behind the firing of eight U.S. attorneys.

Good luck to you!

The Critical 19 Day Document Gap (FMArouet - 3/20/2007 10:42:24 AM)
The most telling gap in DOJ document dumps thus far seems to have been highlighted by reader "Donp" over at Talking Points Memo (tpmmuckraker.com). The DOJ and White House seem to be concealing whole sheaves of damaging documents. The TPM readers' thread is already hundreds of messages long and does not offer an easy navigation path or sub-threads, so here is "Donp's" comment in toto:

"2-1 page 15-18

THE 18 MINUTE GAP??? (Are these in chronological order?)

The email of Nov 15 ends with "Who will determine if this requires the President's attention" and Meiers says it will take a while as he is gone. The plan attached (page 15) to that says to begin making calls on Nov 15. Sampson had also recommended informing Karl.

The next email is dated Dec 4! From William Kelley at 4:48 pm it says:
"We're a go for the US atty plan. WH leg, political, and communications have signed off and acknowledged that we will have to be committed to following through once the pressure comes."

(so Nov 15 says it's time to talk to Karl and maybe the President, but that would take time...and the plan had been to start Nov 15. In this email, the plan has been changed to start calls Dec 7 - 2-1 page 20)

What happened between Nov 15 and Dec 4 to hold up the plan and require a change in execution from Nov 15 to Dec 7? The answer is from Kelley: We're a go for the US atty plan. WH leg, political, and communications have signed off"

The GAP (Teddy - 3/20/2007 2:50:08 PM)
is obvious, and I wondered when the first information about the dump was printed: the WH had signed off the e-mails say after the GAP... so where is the actual evidence of the sign-off? Why such a long time between one set of e-mails and the next? Were there no e-mails because it was face to face talks? If so, where is the necessary written evidence that the White House signed off or otherwise approved? (No bureaucrat worth his salt, especially in this paranoid Administration, would ever undertake any significant action without CYA-ing via written approvals on up the food chain).

We are at the moment free to speculate. Despite Texas Senator Cronyn's snarky comments about it's being too soon to issue subpoenas, the GAP seems to dictate the necessity of issuing subpoenas.

Proposed Theme/Meme for the Gap: (FMArouet - 3/20/2007 3:59:17 PM)
Nixon erased just 18 minutes.
Bush, Rove, and Gonzales are trying to delete 19 days.

Not Chertoff!! (Rebecca - 3/20/2007 5:10:39 PM)
If they're going to consider Chertoff they might as well get out a list of mob ex-cons for consideration as well.
