Gonzales Going Going Gone?

According to the National Journal's latest (3/17/07) "insider poll," Alberto Gonzales appears to be in big trouble.  Here's how Democrats and Republicans responded to the question, "Do you have confidence in the ability of Alberto Gonzales as attorney general?"

Democrats: 93% do not have confidence, with 5% not sure. The tenor of comments is reflected by this quote: "The attorney general has been faithful to President Bush -- and unfaithful to the nation." Ouch.

Republicans: 48% have confidence, 33% do not have confidence, 18% aren't sure. That is not good for Gonzales, not at all.  Here's a typical comment: "One more example of poor management by the current administration. They couldn't manage themselves out of a wet paper bag." Ouch.

And it's not just the insiders, as a new Newsweek poll indicates that "Fewer than one third (32 percent) of those surveyed want [Gonzales] to...remain in his job, while slightly more than one third (35 percent) say he should quit."

Gonzales appears to be going going gone.

He ain't going anywhere (DanG - 3/17/2007 5:31:16 PM)
If Bush listened to the polls, we wouldn't be in Iraq anymore.

It's not just the polls (Lowell - 3/17/2007 5:36:44 PM)
...there's apparently serious dissent within Republican ranks.  We'll see what happens.

Good point. Still... (DanG - 3/17/2007 6:38:34 PM)
There is also some dissent amongst Republicans on the War.  Quite a few of them are starting to think that the War could crush their chances of a win in November.  Hence, the Colemans/Collins/Smiths of the Senate, who all of the sudden have turned strongly against the war.

"Gonzales Survival Prospecs Called 'Slim to None'" (Lowell - 3/17/2007 8:46:11 PM)
See here:

"The chances of the attorney general surviving this, I think, are slim to none - and slim just left the building," said Norman Ornstein, a political analyst at the American Enterprise Institute.

It's Not Up to Gonzales (Susan P. - 3/17/2007 8:07:13 PM)
If he doesn't resign, he can, and should, be impeached. At this point, it's a choice between Gonzales and the rule of law.  I know my preference is for the rule of law.
His actions in lying to Congress also call into question his ability to keep his law license, which would seem to be an important prerequisite to the job of Attorney General.  Does anyone know in what state he was admitted to the Bar?

Reminds me of the Nixon years (Rebecca - 3/17/2007 9:16:45 PM)
During the Nixon years, one by one, everyone close to the President resigned, and then... well, you know what happened next.

Gonzales should go work in a job better suited to his skills, as carnival barker selling the latest brand of snake oil.

Fire and Investigate gonzales (norman swingvoter - 3/17/2007 9:28:13 PM)
In my opinion gonzales should be fired for being nothing but a rubber stamp for bush-cheney instead of upholding our Constitution and our laws.  A proceding should then be started to see if he should be disbarred. At this point it seems that this man has blatantly lied to Congress.  I would also like to see a proceding to see if it is legal for him to bypass Congress using the Patriot Act in appointing prosecutors.  If it is somehow legal, Congress needs to take that out of the Patriot Act immediately.  Congress also needs to see who is responsible for putting that provision into the act.

The longer (libra - 3/17/2007 11:19:31 PM)
Bush defends Gonzales and keeps the "nobody tells me whom to fire" attitude, the more people are likely to see what a-holes both of them are. I'm all for having Abu G twist in the wind for another week or two. During which time even more itty bitty -- but damning -- pieces of info will emerge.

Disbar Gonzales (Andrea Chamblee - 3/18/2007 1:30:40 AM)
A short list of reasons why on on Beltway Progressive and MyDD. There's a good diary linked in the reply, too.

Throw some dirt in his face (Nick Stump - 3/18/2007 3:26:11 AM)
He's dead, and he very well may take Rove with him. This may finally be the one that gets Rove.  Perhaps Wilson's desire to see Rove frogmarched out of the White House will finally be satisfied.
