STATEMENT OF GOVERNOR KAINE
~ On the retirement of State Senator John Chichester ~

RICHMOND - Governor Timothy M. Kaine released the following statement on today's retirement announcement from State Senator John H. Chichester:

"Senator Chichester is an effective and conscientious lawmaker who has guided and guarded Virginia 's budget priorities in a manner that always placed the needs of the Commonwealth first.

"While presiding over the Virginia Senate as Lieutenant Governor, I worked closely with Senator Chichester, and quickly came to appreciate and respect his emphasis on civility, his institutional knowledge, and his principled insistence that we meet our fiscal obligations. That respect has only grown as we have continued to work together since my election as Governor.

"John Chichester's leadership and knowledge will be missed, and his dedication to the Commonwealth is a testimony to the power of public service that is larger than any single legislative district or political ideology.

"I wish John and Karen well, and fully expect that they will continue to find new ways to serve the Commonwealth."  # # #

MORAN STATEMENT ON CHICHESTER RETIREMENT

~Commonwealth loses Statesman~

RICHMOND - House Democratic Caucus Chairman Brian J. Moran made the following statement in response to news that Senate President Pro-tempore and Finance Chairman John Chichester will be retiring this fall.

"Today one of Virginia's great statesmen, Senator John Chichester, announced his retirement. I'm saddened by his decision but thank him for his tremendous service to the Commonwealth.

Virginians of both parties owe a great debt of gratitude to Senator Chichester. He was a tireless and effective advocate for the education of our children. And, as Chairman of Senate Finance, he protected and guarded Virginia's good fiscal management. In recent years I've been proud to get to know John as our bi-partisan partner in the Senate. With his critical work, and Governor Warner's leadership, Virginia was named the best managed state in the nation, the best state to do business, and the state in which a child has the most chance to succeed. That's a record we can all be proud of.

He has showed time and again his unwavering commitment to do what's best for Virginia's future, regardless of politics or partisanship. The Virginia General Assembly needs more John Chichesters."

His brother Dan will likely run (CADeminVA - 3/12/2007 4:42:09 PM)
I don't know if he'll get hammered by the true believers like John did; he will be well funded and his base is Stafford, the bulk of the district's population.

Maybe John Van Hoy will give Dan a run for it. Good for them to have a primary fight.

It does put the seat in play for Peggy Garland, though.
