By my count, our state got four invites to the Big DanceUniversity of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Old Dominion University all received bids to the NCAA Tournament.

UVa and Virginia Tech start off in Columbus on Friday, both receiving top 5 seeds in their brackets. Meanwhile, ODU and VCU are heading to Buffalo to face higher seeds on Thursday.

Congrats to all of those teams, schools, and their fans! Get your brackets fired up ... it's finally March Madness time.

should have been in it too.

Mason had a pretty crappy regular season record (DanG - 3/12/2007 11:41:08 AM)
The NCAA heads care very little about how you do in your respective tournament.  Yeah, Mason got to the finals in the CAA tourney.  But with their Regular Season record, they'll be lucky to get in the NIT.  Just look at NC State in the ACC.  Beat UVA and VA Tech, both relatively good teams, and almost beat UNC for the championship.  But because of the regular season record, NC State isn't in the dance.

George Mason look pretty sharp near the end of the year, but the team I saw get beaten by ODU twice in the regular season wasn't NCAA worthy.

They didn't make the NIT, Dannyboy, and I think that is about right. THey made a push int he CAA tourney, yes, but you have to do a little more. No regular season wins against the rest of the top of the CAA (odu, drexel, vcu) won't help your cause either.

I hope they can get back in the swing of things and recruit well off their late season push, and last year's Final Four so that they become a tournament regular.  I love all these Virginia schools in the post-season.

VCU's first game is Duke (DanG - 3/12/2007 11:00:21 AM)
Ouch.  Welcome to the NCAA tourney, Rams.

On the brigter side, I'm pretty sure Tech (yay!) and UVA (boo!) will win their first games.  And I'm actually predicting that ODU upsets Butler in the first.

Duke has not been playing well (Andrea Chamblee - 3/12/2007 1:26:02 PM)
I'm considering predicting an upset, but I haven't turned in my brackets yet.

They're still Duke (DanG - 3/12/2007 2:40:50 PM)
And they're most likely pissed off at how they were out so quick in the ACC Tournament.  There are a few rules in College Basketball, and one of them is this:

Never count out Duke.

GO HOKIES!!!! (Ghost of A.L. Philpott - 3/12/2007 11:36:56 AM)
Tell me you are kidding about Mason!

I think if the same VT squad that swept UNC, won at Cameron, and smoked UVa at home shows up, we can make the Sweet 16. UVa is in a good situation to go that far as well. ODU is a tossup with Butler, and VCU has a good shot at an ailing Duke squad. The Commonwealth is certainly well represented this year! I'd say we're probably the most impressive state represented in the tournament this year, especially in terms of preseason expectations. Maybe not the best, but the most impressive for sure.

GO HOKIES!!!

George Mason.. (lgb30856 - 3/12/2007 1:09:58 PM)
I heard last year that many wondered how Mason made it to the tourney last year. I thought they looked pretty good in the CAA tourney so I thought they might make it this year.
ODU looks kind of iffy.

ODU had a much better season than Mason (DanG - 3/12/2007 6:44:06 PM)
"I thought they looked pretty good in the CAA tourney so I thought they might make it this year."

Again, these people really don't care what you do in a tournament.  I agree with them.  Any team can get hot and swing through a tournament.  The best way to truly judge a team is over a longer period of time... like the regular season.

Don't get me wrong, Mason looked great in Richmond.  But they looked not-so-great in the Regular Season, and in the end, that's what counts the most.  Judging by the regular season records, I'd take ODU over Mason any day (at least this year).

The would have had to have won their conference. No team from even a power conference will make it to the tournament going 15-14 in their regular season without a big win.

I'll be pulling for ODU (Ghost of A.L. Philpott - 3/12/2007 5:25:38 PM)
but I'm not sure they'll beat Butler. I got to see ODU play earlier this year when my Hokies took 'em down 72-55 back in December.

ODU is an "off or on" kind of team (DanG - 3/12/2007 6:46:59 PM)
As a Hokie, I greatly enjoyed watching the Monarchs get stomped as revenge for the year before.  But ODU can be a really good team when they click.  The problem is that they don't always click.

If the team is working well, they can beat Butler.  If not, they're going to get embarassed (like they were when Mason beat the crap out of them in Richmond last week).  I'm counting on them not wanting to get embarassed.

And for the women (Chris from ASL - 3/13/2007 9:49:17 AM)
Congratulations to ODU Monarchs, getting a 7 and playing Florida State in Fresno...and my beloved JMU Dukes, who are a 9 playing Pitt in Pittsburgh (ouch).
