Taliban Tries to Kill Dick Cheney?

According to the AP:

A suicide bomber killed at least 14 people and wounded about a dozen more outside the main U.S. military base in Afghanistan on Tuesday during a visit by Vice President Dick Cheney, officials said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility and said Cheney was the target.

Cheney's spokeswoman said he was fine, and the U.S. Embassy said the vice president later met with President Hamid Karzai in Kabul before leaving the country.

As much as I disagree with Dick Cheney on pretty much everything, I'm glad to see he wasn't killed or injured in this attack.  While we're on this subject, though, I've got to say that it's interesting and ironic the attack on Cheney came from the Taliban, who we set out to destroy back in the fall of 2001.  Obviously, we didn't succeed.  (Heckuva job, Bush Administration!) Which, of course, raises an important question: why DIDN'T we ever finish the job against the Taliban (and Al Qaeda) in Afghanistan, and instead divert resources and attention to Iraq?  Hmmmm...

Know your enemy (Bubby - 2/27/2007 9:54:25 AM)
Even if Dick and GW have taken their eye off the bad guys, the bad guys have obviously not taken their eye off the Dick.

Karma's gonna get them (Alicia - 2/27/2007 10:26:34 AM)
one way or the other.

Hope the guy that so easily sends others to die, or to get maimed then ignored by multiple layers of our government/military got a small taste of putting your life on the line.

Oh wait.  Wasn't he miles away from the blast?

Wouldn't that be like me saying my life was in danger b/c I was mere miles away from the Pentagon on 9/11?

Good Point (Matt H - 2/27/2007 10:57:22 AM)
I have no feelings for a man with "other priorities" during the Vietnam War who dodged without supporting the anti-war cause (what a wimp).  Now Cheney is a first-class war criminal.

COMMENT HIDDEN (Rebecca - 2/27/2007 1:53:43 PM)

I strongly condemn this comment! (Lowell - 2/27/2007 2:16:02 PM)
In no way, shape or form does this reflect my view, or the views of Raising Kaine.  In fact, the comment disgusts me. I'd delete it, but I think we should leave it here just so people can see this particular individual's mentality level.

By the way, I don't like Dick Cheney AT ALL, but politics in this country are decided by elections and the legal system, not by violence of any kind. I'm really amazed that anyone would write something like this.

By the way, fair warning. (Lowell - 2/27/2007 2:20:59 PM)
Comments like this will get you banned very quickly from Raising Kaine.

how do you feel about... (littlepunk - 2/27/2007 3:09:14 PM)
...the scumbag Reed who tried to kill President Palmer last night?  What a jerk.  Tom Lennox might be a right wing radical, but he is a solid guy.

Sorry to offend (Rebecca - 2/27/2007 3:33:34 PM)
I'm sorry to offend anyone and I don't personally advocate violence, but I think Cheney is a bigger threat to the country than Al-Qaeda. Just my opinion.

I despise everything Cheney stands for (Lowell - 2/27/2007 4:02:27 PM)
...but I would never advocate or applaud his death.  Here's the deal: the American people re-elected for Bush/Cheney in 2004, and now we're stuck with the worst Administration in American history until January 2009.  It sucks, but that's just the sad fact of the matter.

Don't spread propaganda (KCinDC - 2/27/2007 4:25:46 PM)
I don't think this was really a plot to kill Cheney. This TPM reader has it right: it was the sort of bombing that's unfortunately all too common nowadays, and because Cheney happened to be there it's now a huge story.

Mabye, but... (Lowell - 2/27/2007 4:32:07 PM)
...here's what the Washington Post is reporting:

"We wanted to target ... Cheney," Taliban spokesman Mullah Hayat Khan told Reuters by phone from an undisclosed location.

After the fact (KCinDC - 2/27/2007 5:07:40 PM)
What evidence is there that the Taliban knew Cheney was coming? I'm still with the TPM reader:
But because a Taliban spokesman was clever enough to link the attack to Cheney, a fairly routine bombing is now a leading story around the world, and the Taliban has been able to turn a partly thwarted attack (the bomber was forced to detonate his load outside the base) into an enormous propoganda coup. [...] It's in the Taliban's interest to convince the world that they're well-organized enough to have targeted Cheney, and in Cheney's interest not to expend too much effort rebutting that claim.

Who knows. (Lowell - 2/27/2007 6:06:01 PM)

Looks like the stock market took a dive on this news. It seems to be going up some in the last 15 minutes.
