Governor Kaine Blasts GOP Transportation "Plan"

The following statement was sent out by Governor Kaine's office at 6 PM today.  I've added bolding for emphasis.

"Today, Virginians were finally provided a summary description of a transportation proposal crafted in secret by members of the Legislature's majority party.

"Based on a review of that summary, the following is clear:

"This last-minute proposal does not represent a compromise, and it certainly does not represent a solution to Virginia's transportation challenges.

"This proposal would drain almost $200 million a year from the General Fund, pitting transportation against our core priorities in public education, public safety, and public health.

"This proposal does not address our well-documented statewide transportation needs.

"While the two regional proposals have been significantly improved, there has not been sufficient dialogue with local elected officials who would be expected to implement increased taxes and fees.

"This proposal does not do enough for rail or mass transit, which are key elements to a true comprehensive transportation solution.

"When legislation meant to address an issue this important is developed behind closed doors, without open, honest, and bipartisan dialogue, Virginians should take note.

"I remain committed to finding a transportation solution that works for all Virginians, and I am prepared to continue to work with lawmakers in both parties and both chambers to keep Virginia moving forward on transportation."

Sounds like a strong "no" from Governor Kaine.  How do you all read this?

[UPDATE: The Washington Post weighs in strongly in support of Governor Kaine and in opposition to the GOP "too little and too late" plan.]

Great statement. (Rob - 2/23/2007 8:46:05 PM)
He's basically calling this a band-aid non-solution that was crafted behind closed doors.

He's also saying that it would harm (Lowell - 2/23/2007 8:52:09 PM)
public education, public safety, and public health.

Definitely... (Rob - 2/23/2007 9:35:14 PM)
That a big part of why this is a band-aid (non)solution.  This is just robbing from education, health, etc. for an election year play for voters.  What this isn't is a long-term solution for an obvious long-term problem (that the  GOP-controlled legislature has ignored for years).

Post Speculates (PM - 2/24/2007 12:10:29 AM)
Kaine's staff has drafted a special session order that would call the legislature back into session at noon Monday if the plan is defeated Saturday, said two sources familiar with the order. House Republicans, meanwhile, voted privately Friday night to refuse the order if it comes, three sources in the caucus said.

Dennis Kucinich (Lowell - 2/23/2007 10:06:50 PM)
Markos elaborates on his feelings (and mine) about Dennis Kucinich here.  In sum, Kucinich is:

*Nuts
*Flaky
*Bonkers
*Bizarre
*A man who "once ardently anti-choice and anti-stem cell research"
*Someone who doesn't live on the planet earth and who used his last run for President to "score dates."

As Markos says, "ugh!"

Setting up a campaign issue (Teddy - 2/24/2007 12:24:34 AM)
is the Republican game on transportation. That is, the Republicans now can say they offered a comprehensive (to them) transportation solution which did not raise taxes, and arranged for regional taxes and control of transportation "solutions," thus avoiding asking the rest of the Commonwealth to suffer any inconvenience or requirements to pay for anything; they can claim the Governor did not cooperate. That will be their story, and they are sticking to it. So, it is up to the rest of us to make sure the public does not buy into this fairy tale, that they recognize it for the scam it is--- and votes the Sweet Ol' Boys (that is, the SOB's) out come November.
